Default Sixteen Candles (1984) (Remastered) coming from Arrow

Sixteen Candles Blu-ray (Remastered)

Quote:
In his debut film as writer-director, John Hughes immediately cemented himself as the king of teen cinema with Sixteen Candles, and in the process also introduced one of the most iconic faces of ‘80s Americana: Molly Ringwald.

For high schooler Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald), her 16th birthday might be the worst day of her life. Her entire family has forgotten about it due to her older sister’s impending wedding; her biggest crush, high school hunk Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling) has discovered an embarrassing “sex quiz” filled out by Sam in which she details how she is saving herself for him; and to make matters worse, she is hounded by a relentless nerd (Anthony Michael Hall) who won’t take no for an answer. But Sam’s sweet sixteen isn’t over yet, and before the end of the night, all her birthday wishes could still come true…

Taking the rude and crude humor of the teen sex comedies that came before it and placing it within the intimately portrayed perspective of a girl’s mid-teenage-life crisis, Sixteen Candles is a bombshell of 80s pop culture that continues to be debated and beloved over three decades after its release.

I already imported the UK disc, but this is great for people without Region free capability. The disc looks great, and the extras are A+!

Q: Why do people get bent out of shape about the Rotten Tomatoes logo, but are perfectly fine with the Arrow logo AND the color bars?

Because that's part of the label's branding. It's not an advertisement from a third party. Apples and oranges with an RT logo. They're also far less obtrusive, and much more uniform than an RT logo that is often placed at random spots.

Some blu-ray releases have the Rotten Tomatoes logo on the cover to tout the fact that they are "fresh".

I'll submit on the 3rd party bit (who pays who for the RT logo to appear?), but I disagree with the label logo & color bars being "less obtrusive." Combine them and they take up far more space on the artwork than a RT logo. Don't get me wrong, I'd definitely love to see the RT logo be drastically shrunk, or removed altogether.

Damn. I wonder what happened. This will still be a very solid release, but it’s still oddly disappointing.

I'm not really talking about how much space they take up, but their placement. The Arrow branding are all at the bottom of the cover and don't interfere much with the artwork itself. An RT logo is often planted smack dab in the middle of the artwork, detracting from it more than some color bars at the very bottom in my opinion.

Honestly, I like Criterion but I think Arrow releasing it is better news for fans of the film. It'll have better compression, a meaty booklet instead of a cheap leaflet, and a sturdy case instead of a potential flimsy digipack.

Yeah, plus it wouldn't surprise me if this edition has a lot more extras than whatever Criterion would have put out.

I was just gonna say this.

I’m glad Criterion dropped the release tbh. You know the encode would’ve been worse than Arrow’s. This is great news.

I already have the RB edition of Elvira, but I held off on Sixteen Candles. It’ll look great next to Arrow’s Weird Science (still one of the best slip covers I’ve ever seen).

Ah yes, Arrow's meaty booklets that are most often 60-70% pictures. I love Arrow, but their booklets most often suck. Now Indicator, that is how you booklet.

Glad Arrow is releasing this. Criterion probably wouldn't have included the extended cut tbh.
