Alrighty folks, I've been going back and forth on this for over a week now. I'm replacing a TV in my study room with either a new model 2009 Sammy or Sony. I've seen both and they look pretty decent.
I've been looking at the KDL40V5100 for Sony. ($1250) Specs are: -40-inch 16:9 Full HD 1080p Resolution -Dynamic contrast 50,000:1 -Motionflow 120Hz technology -Seven HD inputs, including four HDMI inputs (up to 1080/60p capable), HD component and combo inputs (1080/60i capable), and a PC input - Bravia Engine 2 Versus The Samsung LN40B550 ($950) Specs are: -HD-Grade 1920 (H) x 1080 (V) pixel -Touch of ColorTM (ToC) with a stylish red tone -Built-in digital tuner: (ATSC/Clear QAM) -Game Mode -Wide Color Enhancer2 -Contrast 70,000:1 -6ms Pixel Response I mainly watch movies and sports, but also watch cable if a decent show is on. The main reason I've been going back and forth between the two is the Sammy is 60hz while the Sony is 120hz. Which then leads to is $300 bucks more worth it. The Sony does 24p but I can;t recall if the Sammy does or not. Is a 120hz display worth the extra cost? ![]() |

If you're going to add a Blu ray player I say go for the Sony if not Samsung is excellent too. Plus at that price the Samsung is a steal.

I was thinking the same thing that you were. The 6ms response time is sort of slow especially being a new 2009 model TV. But then again, this model is somewhat on their lower end line. |

Normally I would say get the Sammy, but in this case, I am going to have to agree with everyone else and say go for the Sony. The specs look much better. The only thing I thought was odd is that for a dynamic contrast ratio, the sonys is really low at only 50,000:1. What is its native contrast ratio?

I will agree that with sports (on some stations) the motion enhancer helps. I like to watch Hockey, but not basketball with it on. I would say the Sony, you are paying a little more for it, but I think gaining a little more too. The Sammy is a good price though. |

I hear the V5100 is a nice tv. I saw one for the first time as a matter of fact last night. Tempting for me I will say that until I found out that basically what it is is just an upgrade to the V4100 series. Offers a 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 120hz and 7 HDMI ports and Bravia 2 engine. Very nice I will say that. Maybe next spring for me but thats a long way off. |

When I was lookling to buy my TV, I went back and forth for a long time with these two brands as well. I decided to base my decision on the quality of these companies other products. Just about everything I have ever bought by samsung has broken in a year or two. On the other hand I have never had any problems with the Sony merchandise I purchased. So I went with the Sony and I love it.

The real question is going to be: Do you have a sound system in that room?
If you have a sound system in that room go with the Samsung, but you don't I would so the Sony. Its that simple! Its no good watching a movie if you can't hear it (Samsung). |

If you plan to play games on it with xbox or ps3 the sony plays them both perfectly. That 550 has an older amp processor which endures lag during gaming. I wish I could find that link over on avs where a member posted a lcd gaming test between the two brands. It was extensive and well written full of detail. End result, was to go with the Sony.
