Default Intercutting HD & SD seamless branching.

Is it possible for Blu Ray to have intercutting in different resolutions? Say something shot with both film and videotape could have the filmed scenes in HD, while the video scenes remain in SD. Could it work with seamless branching, or does everything HAVE to be the same resolution?

Well, I don't know about Blu-ray, but while watching the original My Bloody Valentine extended version on DVD I could certainly tell a difference in the alternate and additional footage and the material that was originally released in the theatrical version. Hope they get this fixed when before they give it a Blu-ray release.

But DVD is only 720x480. Blu Ray is capable of 1080p, 720p, and 480p. I was wondering if it's possible to intercut between either of these in the same title, or if it all has to be the same resolution. Could "film" scenes be in 1080p, and then cut to the "video" scenes in 480p, or would everything HAVE to be in 1080p?

In theory, I'm sure it's possible. In practice, because of player limitations, I would see the best bet as re-encoding the 480p segments in 1080p, either by repeating pixels to reach the correct resolution, or by doing software upconversion. This would avoid certain players freaking out when the resolution and cadence changes as they read, seeing as how most players struggle to properly recognise film cadences as it is.

Since most studios refuse to upconvert SD, that means there's no hope for Doctor Who on Blu Ray.

If you're asking your hypothetical question to lead to Dr. Who...

From what I've read online, Dr. Who's earlier seasons was shot on SD and VFX is built on that. So no luck on that.

If the newer seasons are shot in HD, the VFX are done in SD and mastered in SD, then the Beebs can fork up the money when they want to release it on BD. All they need to do is redo the VFX in HD, match the cut for HD mastering and it's all set.

As someone else already said, it's a lot easier for the studio to upconvert the SD if it's going to be used as part of a seamless branching feature.

My projector goes blank for several seconds and displays an on-screen message every time the resolution changes. I suspect this is a common occurrence with many monitors and projectors. As a result, changing resolutions within an episode would be very annoying.
