Question Should Seamless Branching Be Utilized More?

Should Seamless Branching be used more to incorporate deleted and/or alternate scenes into movies?

I'd love to be able to watch deleted/alternate scenes, if they are complete, within the movie itself. Television will often do this, but since Blu-ray has the space, I'd love to see it used more.

What do you think?

i would have loved to have had seamless branching on Kingdom of Heaven and Donnie Brasco to have the extended/director's cut and the theatrical. Mainly because it'd be cool, and I haven't seen the theatrical version of Kingdom of Heaven.

I love the idea of seamless branching. It would be fantastic for alternate scenes, or having a theatrical and unrated cut of the same movie on the same disc.

I personally am very annoyed that they don't give you those options. The only movies I know that I have seen that have it are the EE LOTR. there may be more but I have not wtched them. I think this is a no brainer. Have an option to watch with or without the deleted/extended scenes.

I guess it's fine to have as an option, but I don't think I would use it. Too often there are scenes deleted that can change the flavor of an entire movie, and other scenes slow things down or otherwise interfere with the pacing. Deletions that are done for artisitic purposes should never be watched with the movie, the first time, anyway.

Those are good points. I probably would never watch them the first time, though I like the post referring to watching the theatrical version if a directors cut is the default on disc. There are times I've watched deleted scenes though and wished I could watch them within the movie for the next viewing.

Ideally, you would be able to watch only the ones you wanted so that if there are 20 deleted scenes, and you would like to see just one within the movie you can. I do not know how complex they can make it though.

Yes, when they have different "cuts" of a film, i.e. the theatrical cut, the director's cut, etc. I don't care so much for out-takes and goofs. Often out-takes were left out for a good reason.

Case in point: Blade Runner. Anyone else watch the deleted scenes? The presentation was very nice, but their inclusion in any final edit would have made the film one of the worst I've ever seen...

There are some exceptions. Take the dance sequences in Tabor Ukhodit v Nebo. I would love to see the out-takes from those, but not the first time around. That director (Emil Loteanu) usually shot no more than two takes of each set-up, but still...

Close Encounters of the Third Kind was nicely done. There were 3 versions.

You all make good points for not including them, I just would like the option to be there just in case.

I'd love to see seamless branching used more to include theatrical / director's cut / other versions on a single disc. Way more appealing than PiP, online features, production featurettes, Java games, and the like.

Absolutely - it should be used wherever possible, and not just for deleted scenes. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS used it to put 3 versions of the film on one disc, but BLADE RUNNER used three discs for three versions. APOCALYPSE NOW is out on two different DVD versions that could fit on one Blu disc. Same for THE EXORCIST. There are two versions of the original ALIEN and ALIENS. I'm not too concerned about deleted scenes that were left out for good reasons, but would like to have theatrical and director's cuts both on one disc.
