Directors and DPs change their minds all the time. How many different gradings of HALLOWEEN has Dean Cundey approved?! They can't all be correct. Sometimes the filmmakers forget how they wanted the film to look in the first place (probably what happened here with Yu), and sometimes they purposely want a different look than before (see Michael Mann).

Yes, according to Frank that's exactly what happened. When Ronny reviewed the Spectrum master he didn't have the Tai Seng DVD as reference and so he most likely saw the improvement in resolution, detail, etc. from the 4K scan and was impressed enough to sign off on it, not realizing that the colors had been tweaked so much-remember, this film was made 27 years ago!

It was only after Frank/Eureka showed Ronny a side-by-side comparison of the Tai Seng DVD vs the 4K scan that he realized how different the color scheme were between the two of them. The Tai Seng DVD master was identical to the theatrical print and both have the darker, richer color palette that Peter and Ronny envisioned. Frank said he also mentioned about the new color grading and how that came about in his new audio commentary for the Eureka Blu-Ray.

Eureka's Facebook announcement has a trailer that's edited from the color corrected master.

Though I recognise it's not as good, I actually prefer The Bride With White Hair 2 to the original and would buy it on Blu-ray in a heartbeat.

He gave the OK for Eureka to do the new color grading to match the colors on the TS DVD and gave his seal of approval upon seeing the final product.

It's not revisionist at all--it's preserving Ronny's and Peter Pau's original vision and color palette for the film so that what you see on the Eureka Blu-ray will be identical to how you would've seen the film theatrically almost 30 years ago.

Frank also said that if there are enough "votes" from folks then Eureka will consider releasing BRIDE 2 (which needs more extensive restoration than Part 1) and Ronny's THE PHANTOM LOVER, also with Leslie Cheung.

Funny you mentioned this because I asked Frank about it too! He said the Facebook announcement was correct but the one on the Eureka website had a mistake--the Richard Yuen interview and the David Wu interview's duration were reversed. The David Wu interview was the 81 minutes one. Frank said he interviewed David but Richard shot his talk by himself.

Frank said David (who spoke English for the interview) was funny and very talkative and the interview covered tons of stuff--not just about BRIDE 1 but also BRIDE 2, David's editing work on other films like John Woo's THE KILLER, and his views on other films/editors (He's not a fan of the Michael Bay-style of rapid editing). In fact, Frank got concerned since he only blocked a 90 minute ZOOM session for David. Luckily the interview got done 4 minutes before the session ended!

Frank said his goal was to make Eureka's Blu Ray the best of all the releases, which is why he tried to include as many interviews as he could. He's sad that he couldn't get Peter Pau as he's busy shooting Wong Ka Wai's TV series in China and ZOOM is no longer directly available there but he was overcome with joy with the new color grading. He's seen the new master and he said it's gorgeous.

This is what I have argued previously about having the correct color scheme. Just basing it on the old Tai Seng dvd and commentary with Ronny. Those were his words recorded back in the 90`s for the TS dvd regarding the effort and care that him and Peter Pau went to to get a very specific look as to how he wanted the movie to be seen. I always though the TS release might have been just a bit too dark but, wow, a direct master. So, yeah, that kind of settles it then as to how it should look and how it did look. Sucks that I wasted like $80 or so on that atrocious HK blu-ray from a couple of years ago. It was way too bright and wasn't correct on color timing, missing some filters and it's re-edited end credits sequence. Horrible! I'm very thankful, grateful for everyone of you that spoke up and made this release what it should be. The movie should look the way it was meant to be seen. Thank goodness things have come into alignment here and we shall be getting the definitive blu-ray. My pre-order has been in since the day it was announced. These are important films and certainly deserve the respect that they have been getting from Eureka and 88. But, yeah, thank all of you that have worked on this release.

another thing i noticed, the audio commentary since ever has the channels on the wrong sides. Brigitte throwing blade to left side, but heard on right side is the most glaring fault to be noticed immediately. (77:56 23.976fps)

it's wrong for the whole movie runtime.

edit: it's also often badly out of synch by up to 300ms too late in France.

I was looking forward to this but now I read in a review that a proofing note has been left in the subtitles and a replacement disc is being considered. Does anyone have any more details?

Such a minor error won't spoil my joy of looking forward to this release. If they catch it before release, that's okay, if not, well, I'll live with it.

The names in the review are Mandarin. I suspect the reviewer took them from another source. I've seen that with translations I've done.

Indeed it does sound like a very minor error. I found the DVD borderline unwatchable so I'm certainly looking forward to revisiting the film on Blu-ray and won't be cancelling my order or anything like that. I just find having to deal with replacement discs tiresome, I'd rather the release was delayed if that's the way Eureka want to handle it.

I'd also rather they delay the release and fix this error. Might even cancel my long-standing pre-order. Can't be bothered with the hassle of sending a disc back if they decide to correct this and do a returns policy.

I’m going to wait a few weeks till they sort everything out and then will buy direct from Eureka. I’m 100% getting the disc, but they’ll need to have everything sorted before I do.
