Default Are there any tiny speakers with excellent range, both high and low?

I tried out a set up without a subwoofer and I'd rather not go back to using a subwoofer. I like hearing the directionality to all the bass. I know some use two subwoofers to solve that problem, but I don't think my receiver works with two subwoofers ... and besides with just two, you just get stereo which is fine for music but not for movies.

Any recommendations?

I need 7 satellites and a maximum budget of 1.5K but I'd prefer to limit myself to 1K (lower the better of course!) I never play anything at loud volumes so all I really need is good range (bass for obvious reasons but also for the higher frequencies as I can still hear them).

Once I upgrade, I guess I'll use my old set up for the bedroom or something.

Your post is confusing- you typically don't want to hear which direction LFE is coming from- ie non-directional. Yet you mention that you LIKE to hear directionality. Then you mention using two subwoofers to solve that problem- typically two subwoofers helps with standing waves and reducing directionality. Finally you talk about two for stereo. As a whole I'm lost.

Two subwoofers can be used with a Y-splitter from the LFE out. Typically the smaller the speaker, the less it's ability to produce a wide range of audio well- this is just simple physics, as the sound has to work within the enclosure. Beta's listed some that do as well a job as can be expected.

Perhaps if you clarify a bit what you're looking for it'd be easier to offer advice?

Sorry.

All I know is that when I tried the setup without using the subwoofer (and setting all speakers to large on the receiver), I liked hearing the directionality in the bass which was missing with the subwoofer.

Maybe I should just set all speakers to large and keep the subwoofer. But then as you say I find distracting the directionality I do sense in the subwoofer. Would adding another subwoofer solve the problem like you suggest?

Does magnetic shielding degrade over time btw?

A 5.1 setup requires a subwoofer. The .1 channel (LFE) is a dedicated low frequency channel. Most home theaters crossover ALL bass to the sub.. so it gets the LFE and all the other channel bass. If you get a good set of towers for bass.. you still want a sub for dedicated LFE channel. The LFE channel is mainly for rumbles to accent explosions and jets, etc.

Also, most people won't mind crossing over everything to the sub as bass is pretty omnidirectional as it is.. but a proper 5.1 setup technically the sub is just LFE channel.

If you're subwoofer is decent, and set up correctly, you shouldn't have ANY directionality to your bass. If you can localize your subwoofer when playing, you should try lowering the crossover point, so it's below 100 Hz, preferably 80 Hz. I'm not sure what you're truly striving for in a system, but it sounds a bit - off. Would you please explain in a little more detail what the directionality is that you are referring to and like?

Without a little more detail, I'm not sure if we can help you appropriately. If you want small speakers, as well as bass response without a sub, you might consider a tactile transducer (bass shaker) for your seat, along with some small satellite speakers. You'll still probably end up with noticeable mid-range dropout though.

An old adage that largely still holds true today is:

"Bass takes space"

you will never find satellite speakers that can handle good low end, you will need a sub if you go that route, I have never heard small satellite speakers go below 80hz this would be the cut off point for manufactures making this type of speaker. The smallest speaker i have listened to with amazing low end is the Paradigm studio 10's v5 but your budget will only cover 1 pair.
