As I'm sure someone on here has said by now, hearing HD sound is dependent on more than just your settings. You have to have good speakers, the right receiver, etc. etc. etc.
So if you can't hear the difference, be glad that you will never be tormented by the lower quality sound of DVD. I can not watch TV without seeing tons of video errors, especially on SD channels... and this is the curse of HD.

I didn't take it personally at all, and I appreciate that you made the post. It caused me to take a second look at a post I had made, which was not worded well, and as a result, could have been very misleading.
