My PS3 60 gig unit optical reader just died, according to sony support.
It was working fine yesterday as i watched a blu-ray. This morning i put in a dvd..the main PS screen witht he wave came up as normal...it went to main settings ..and then recognized dvd-rom - automatically selecting it and then... nothing. Just a blank screen. It does same thing with a blu-ray. Tech support said to restore ps3 settings...tried that - no luck. He said basically im guessing your reader just died. He said options are to send it in to the local service depot...they will try and fix the prbolem and if they cant - send you a refurbished one in exchange. Cost will be $149 either way to send to the depot for the service. I dont have my receipt becasue they need proof of purchase and besides i got in november 2007. What do you think i should do? 1. Get a ps3 on ebay new 2. Send this one for service (will the unit/exchange unit come with another year warranty or 90 day?) 3. get another blu-ray player altogether. |

I think i have the same problem as you, but so far is not that dead. I put in a game or some dvds it get recognise by the ps3 but then i get the black screen. My system is from 2006 but my brother's system is from 2007 his has alredy been replace by sony from the yellow light of death. We filed a report two days later they send him a pre-paid box we send it out that same day and 3 or 4 days later we had it back, so it was a total of like 9 nine days. They did tell us it was going to be a refurbish one but the one we got didn't even have a scrath on it. It seemed like it was brand new. Which i was surprise by. I would just send it to sony unless you think you can fix it yourself. Remeberr that once you open up your system sony will not take it so keep that in mind.

That sucks. Happened to me last year. I called Sony support the day it happened because I was still under warranty. They sent me a PS3 shipping coffin, I packaged it up, mailed it, and waited. It took exactly 3 weeks to get it back from the day I called them. It was the same PS3 with a new Blu-Ray drive installed. Works fine so far. (Fingers crossed)

$149 is quite a bit.
In Vancouver, I know there's a guy who fixes Xbox360's RRODs and PS3 optical drive problems for very reasonable prices. My friend got his RROD fixed for $40, and it was done in 2 days, but you do have to drop it off and pick it up. Dunno how much the PS3 replacing blu-laser costs though. Check craigslist or facebook market for similar people in your area is what I would do, and then try to find other ppl recommending them to be decent. |
