Arrow Spawn reboot details

Here's what McFarlane revealed exclusively to MTV:

Quote:
“With Spawn, I have five legitimate offers sitting on the table,” the writer/artist/entrepreneur revealed to MTV News recently. “Ever since ‘Iron Man,’ they’ve been phoning every day.”

At this point, McFarlane explained, he’s trying to decide between two options: “If I go with the lower-budget movie, they’ll let me direct it. And if I go bigger, than I sit in the producer’s chair; if the budget’s too big, they’re not going to give me the chance at [directing] it. So I’m trying to decide whether I want to go big production, bigger money, bigger marketing — or just do something that’s a little bit smaller, more rock ‘n’ roll, and the way I’ve had it in my brain for the last five years.”

If McFarlane does direct the film, it will be his cinematic debut behind the camera.

So, what exactly is floating around inside McFarlane’s brain? A dark, realistic crime flick styled after several classic films — and most certainly not starring John Leguizamo as an obese clown. “The thing I’ve had in my head for a long time isn’t a big comic-book movie,” he explained. “Everything’s real; it’s like ‘The Departed,’ ‘L.A. Confidential’ or something like that — and there’s only one thing out of the ordinary in the story I’ve written, which is the thing people know as Spawn. And only a few people see it.”

“To me, it’s more along the lines of ‘Jaws,’ where you didn’t see [the shark] for half the movie, and then you caught glimpses of him,” McFarlane said of Spawn, the only supernatural character in his vision. “Jaws was somewhat fantastic in that movie, and to keep it low-budget I can’t have spaceships and super-villains and all that stuff.”

“You’re not going to get an [origin story] with a rubber costume,” McFarlane explained of Spawn’s new look. “As a matter-of-fact, you’ll never see Spawn in his full regalia, because to me, he’s more of a sentinel, like a living shadow. I’ve shown the artwork [to potential investors] and he’s all black; he doesn’t look exactly like what people have seen in the comic book.”
So what do you guys think? Should he keep it low budget and maintain total control?

Oh no!!! We don't need another Frank Miller fiasco. Go with the BIG budget and play producer...Maybe this time they'll get it done right.

I'm not sure what to think, first he compares it to The Departed and LA Confidential and than a moment later it's Jaws, and Spawn is in hiding most the movie. My only knowledge of Spawn is the first movie so fans of this please fill me in here, wasn't it like the original movie all wild and crazy with a fat clown or was that all made up for the movie?

I'm open-minded. Just give me Spawn, sooner the better.

I really am torn between these two options. I LOVE the idea of McFarlane directing, but I am not sold on his story's direction (yes, I realize what I just said, but it made sense to me).

I think I need to hear more about this. Maybe more details on what a big budget production would bring in terms of a story....

What? But I loved John Leguizamo as the clown! lol

Will be glad to see what comes of this. I always thought Spawn had a lot of untapped potential.

Don't really care as long as it's better than the first. I hated JL as the clown.

I'm with you on this one. Not sure what he is even talking about with that description.

From the bits and pieces I have read from Mcfarlane over the years he wants to do a Spawn sequel as a crime drama with Sam & Twitch revolving around the crimes & murders in the Allys involving Spawn. Spawn would hardly been seen threw most of the movie, hence the Jaws reference.

As to option A or B? For me it comes down to which studio is picking it up and who is directing? Nobody can screw up a good comic book movie like Fox can. So if Fox or Bret Rattner are going to do this on a big budget I say go low budget and do it Todd's way. On the other hand if Warner Brothers and Zack Snyder with Todd Mcfarlane producing are going to do it, I say big budget.

Why would McFarlane do a Spawn movie where Spawn wasn't really in it? Isn't that a slap in the face to all his dedicated Spawn fans that want to see Spawn come to life from the stories they fell in love with?

I say screw the budget and just focus on getting whoever (studio/director combination) will do the best job at bringing the comic book to life. And if McFarlane can't contribute to that happening then l say he doesn't need to be in the producer's chair or the director's chair.

I mean come on, Jaws???? What a jip.

The more I think about this, the more it seems to me McFarlane is hopping aboard the reboot bus and trying to squeeze a few more dollars from this franchise. Okay, you got the animated movie and the live action movie, but I don't really see people clamoring for new Spawn stuff.

Ugh. Nothing he says about what he has planned sounds good.

I was never big on Spawn, but I enjoyed the original movie that they did.

It sounds like he's not embaressed by his original Spawn stuff, so wants to play revisionist history with the character. Since he's talking about throwing out pretty much everything that makes Spawn ... Spawn.

Todd McFarlane is a hack anyway. But I'm sure it will please fans of his original Spawn stuff to have him basically treat it like the red-headed stepchild and lock it away in the attic. While he makes Spawn In Name Only.

I say go big budget and hire a good and experienced director. And we want to see Spawn as he is in the comics, that's the whole point.

In the attic is where those creepy gingers belong! But I don't know if Spawn could survive the creepy faces. Keep em away from me!

and it said everything would be normal but spawn...thats not cool either.

I mean regular criminal vs. spawn wonder who will win...... well spawn will win no matter what...but still you want to think its a possibility he will lose.

I say big budget...

yeah Big Budget has my vote too. I don't know anymore of Spawn but what I saw in the first film, but no way could they make this work like the Departed!
