After hearing Sony reports on a 5 million-6 million sales target, my doubts on the PS3 sales figures were starting to disappear.

They said that if all of the units that they produce would be sold out, they can have the following breakdown:

End of the year = 2.4 million
January 2007 = 1.2 million
February 2007 = 1.2-1.7 million
March 2007 = 1.2-1.7 million

Thus, renewed confidence of achieving the promised 5-6 million PS3 sales.

With that, I'm getting the PS3 as my first next-gen console and as my first-gen blu-ray device.

I feel that the hunt to bring the XBOX 360 to last place (out of the three) feels even more thrilling and I feel hungry in sending it to the bottom pit

I voted Samsung because I have it now, and I just might keep it. A few operational quirks aside, it is not the horrorshow it's been made out to be. Seriously.

I believe you.

What operational quirks are you having?

Well, the DTS drop-frame issue with Lionsgate BDs for starters. I've been asking around on AVS Forum if anyone with Dinosaur could see if this problem also happens with Disney titles, but haven't heard back yet. Also, sometimes the player can't seem to remember which resolution I have it set to. Sometimes it powers up at 1080p, other times it powers up 1080i. (I have a full 1080p Sammy DLP, as well as a 1080p-compliant Pioneer Elite receiver.) And once, for no reason that I could figure out, the audio settings had reverted back to factory defaults. The video resolution is no big deal because it's still some form of 1080; at least it's not reverting to 480p or something. But the audio reset was instantly noticeable. I don't know how or why that happened, and it hasn't happened since.

Like I said, operational quirks.

bferr1:

Do you ever have audio dropouts, picture freezes, or anything that disrupts the perfect playback of a BD? The resolution change and audio reset glitches have never happened while watching a movie have they? I'm trying to see if the Sammy should still be on my radar.

I've had the August player since Thursday, 9/14, and there have been no audio dropouts or picture freezes in all that time. There was one split second video hiccup with my first player, the June-build, that I swapped out for the August-build.

The resolution changes have been at startup only, not during playback at all. It's like something goofy happens during the whole HDMI handshake process where sometimes the player sets to 1080p, other times 1080i. This happens frequently at startup.

The audio settings change has only happened once. I had been playing around with the settings menu the night before, so maybe I somehow inadvertantly reset the player without realizing it. In fact, everything I personalized was reset to its default this one time, including the audio, video, parental control, even the front panel dimmer. So maybe it was something I did.

Chris and kevinca1, has anything like this happened with your Samsungs?

Thanks. The Sammy definitely sounds better than the Tosh in that regard. Nothing I hate more than trying to show off the format to a friend and having the audio disappear.

What audio settings were changing themselves?

I had the Sammy for about 2 months, so I might have some feedback...

All audio settings had changed back to the factory defaults. But maybe it was something I did without realizing. Still, I'd like to read your feedback.

I've had a few problems with the hdmi hiccuping with the Samsung at startup as well. I think it's a handshake thing and probably related to routing the video through an AVR and as well as a video processor before going to the display. I've figured out that you can avoid a lot of issue by turning on the display (or in my case the AVR) last, letting the player boot first. This also works well with HD DVD. A couple times the player has locked up during loading forcing me to unplug it to reset. Just happened to day when reviewing Full Metal Jacket, matter of fact.

I have had a number of discs that had momentary (usually split second) signal losses, usually about the length of a very fast layer change. I just passed it off as a dirty disc or poor error correction in the player. The biggest problem I've had with the Sammy is lipsync with PCM audio over HDMI. Fortunately, my AVR has an input selectible audio delay just for such. It doesn't affect bitstreaming the DD tracks on LG or Warner discs though - just LPCM on Sony.

Default Which player are you going to buy

I plan on getting the Sony. Its a beauty. Been wanting a player since day one but just couldn't see buying the Samsung. So what I did was buy Underworld on the first day they came out ,then I picked up 50 First dates and The Punisher. Want to have a few titles before I get the machine. Whats a player without content. The Pioneer would be my second choice.

That would be cool! You should vote for "other" then.

How much for the player/recorder? Any MSRP announced?

Default I chose the Pioneer Elite until ???? comes out

I chose the Pioneer Elite only for its quality build, not its features. My ultimate Player is still on someone's drawing board or in pre-production. It will have all the bells and whistles we've talked about here on the Forum, including the HDMI 1.3 chip, 192/24 DAC's, Lossless Audio, and so on. Now, I will have to upgrade my Pre-Amp/Processor to address all these new Audio capabilities. That's on the way as well, sometime next year. One thing I've learned is patience and long suffering, and it seems to always turn out OK for all of us. Now, I'll just sit back and watch the drama unfold as the BDA prepare to launch its new toys for the Holiday Season. This should be fun to watch !!!

I will wait for reviews, but I have high hopes for the Panasonic. The notable non-obvious features I need in the short term are :
1. Quality of the analog audio output, because my preamp doesn't have hdmi, and I don't indend to have one anytime soon, and hopefully never.
2. Scaler performance is critical, my PJ is 720p and will not be upgraded for at least two years.

By the time I upgrade my PJ to a 1080p, it will also be a good time to upgrade my player

Panasonic's ones are nice...
So are Sony's.
PS3 is nice...

And I'll be short of cash.
