Just go out and pick up a 60 GB PS3. It's cheaper, and does more than all the other BD players. The only downside, is that you don't get an infrared remote. Bu, you can always buy one for $20 USD.

well the ps3 doesent upconvert and isnt the picture better on regular blu-ray players.
and supposedly this new samsung player is going to have this crazy new picture quality. does anyone know what time in march this player will come out because i could most likely wait if its early but i dont want to have to wait until the end of the month |

In a few months time, the PS3 will most probably be able to up convert.
And, as far as I know, the PS3 is the best BD player out there. I don't know where you got the PQ claim from. |

I have a PS3 here...it just doesn't look neat to use a PS3 and look at that as ur HD home theater...the picture quality doesn't look as good as stand-alone blu-ray players...one reason is that stand-alone Blu-ray players have more features and it is really meant to watch movies...unlike the PS3, it's not only movies but mostly focused in games...this is why you can see a much smoother look in stand-alone players than a PS3...same way when u compare a PS2 and a stand-alone dvd player
edit: i forgot but my advice is for you to wait a little...blu-ray players are still expensive...plus you can't really tell it will win the next-gen format...i'd wait if I were u...that's jsut an advice you can take or not Last edited by preston001; 01-14-2007 at 10:01 PM. |

Make sure you have a new/newer TV too as the Blu-Ray movies on my 3 year old HDTV WS65813 Mitsubishi 1080i are no better than the same images via a DVD player. When the PS3 and same movies are viewed on my new 27" Samsung 1080i LCD the Blu-Ray movies look awesome compared to DVD signals fed into the same TV.

"Smoother look" with a stand alone???
Dude, step away from the Hookah! ... JK, we're all friends here ![]() Unless you can have both a standalone and the PS3 sitting side by side to compare, you really can't say that one is anymore smooth than the other... and before you come back with "the guy at circuit city showed me both side by side" think for a minute, you are looking at BD, and trying to decide, who set up the test? you or him? which unit does he REALLY want to sell you? Does he want to get the commission on 600, or does he want the commission on 1000? Thats why I put a bit more weight into the review I linked above, he isn't on commission, and there is no benifit to him wether you buy it or not. Updating is a snap, plug it in to an ethernet connection, and click on update. As for how it looks: ![]() Besides, when you are watching a movie, its going to have the lights turned down, and no one will give a damn how the player looks I'm loving the PS3, and as for all this garbage about how it doesn't have all the features of stand alones, for the most part that is crap, it has 5.1, DTS, ACC, and 7.1 (granted, it only has 7.1 if you use an HDMI reciever) Drop an extra 25 and get the remote, and it will stand toe to toe with darn near anything |

Montivette, what kind of cabling are you using to your mitsu? I have a three year old Sony, I cheat and use the HDMI out from the PS3 (which they didn't have back then) and connect it to the DVI port on the TV.... trust me, if you aren't doing this, you are shooting yourself in the foot... Have tried HDMI to DVI and via component cable with identical results. At a foot or two away you can see the blu-ray image is a bit crisper and it has more pixels, but the blu-ray movie image is not as vibrant/vivid in color or in brightness as the DVD. At a normal distance when flipping back in forth between two paused movies, one Blu-Ray, one DVD, the Blu-Ray image does not stand out immediately as the better image, it perhaps could be said to be crisper or sharper, but the color detail is lacking which makes the DVD images look better. I have paused on various peoples faces and other objects to compare the detail of one vs the other and at 10' you really can't see much of a difference. The PS3 and same movies on newer LCD look stunning and perhaps I would say 10x better of an image. It has more of a mind blowing "wow that is super nice" kind of image. It is like night and day. On the 3 year old TV it is like night compared to night and a toss up as to which image is the better image, the one with move vibrant colors (DVD) but slightly soft and fussy around the edges, or the Blu Ray which has a more crisp/sharper image but has duller color and no noticeable increase in detail. On the LCD I could see the potmarks in peoples faces, the pores of their skin, their faces were like a 3-D landscape. On the CRT there is virtually no difference DVD or Blu-Ray. |
