The 120hz tv is always 120hz. There is nothing to turn it on or off.

What he is seeing is the received signal. Nobody broadcast at higher then 60hz and most Blu-ray movies are 24hz.

So then what is the point of having 120hz? he says that he is seeing a little bit of a shadow when he watches blu-rays and he thought this may have been the cause.

120hz can display 24p without using image interpolation of 3:2 pulldown, essentially it eliminates the "stutter" effect that's noticeable during slow pans.

+1, you are viewing the picture the way it was intended to be viewed at 120hz, which means the 1080p/24 picture is being correctly refreshed and displayed, but this only occurs if you have the AMP (Auto Motion Plus) turned off.

Not true..I have a 120HZ Sony and a Samsung 240HZ and both LCD allow you to turn off this feature.

The TV takes that 24hz or 60hz signal, and multiplies it to go evenly into the 120hz framerate. 24hz or 24 times a second X 5 = 120, so each frame is repeated 5x. 60 X 2 = 120 so it doubles 60hz framerates. The end result is supposed to be that there is less blurring since each frame is refreshed much more quickly.

If he's still seeing a shadow, turn off motion interpolation- Automotion, Motionplus, whatever it's called. If he's still seeing it, well unfortunately that's one of the factors that affect some LCD's.

You're confusing Motionflow/Motionplus with the 120hz refresh rate. They're not the same thing.

no, my friend is just wondering why it always says 24hz or 60hz instead of 120hz.

It's displaying the signal it's receiving. It then does the below:

Personally, I'd have 24p on, but if it looks like there's judder or stuttering leave it off. Some sets do it better than others.

Outputting 24p to a 120hz TV eliminates the 3:2 pull-down judder, not the stutter effect in slow pans.

Most movies (film) are shot at 24 frames per second so the correct way to wath them is 24p. On a 120Hz refresh rate display 24 x 5 refreshes = 120

Most things shot on video are done at 60 interlaced fields per second (a field is half of a frame) so the correct way to watch them is at 60Hz. On a 120Hz refresh rate display 60 x 2 refreshes = 120.

Some film/video material is done at 30 frames per second and should also be seen at 60 Hz. On a 120Hz refresh rate display 30 x 4 refreshes = 120.

Question. If 60hz is the proper way to watch a movie because it was filmed at 60hz or transfered to video at 60hz then whats the point of having a 120hz tv? When watching a Blu ray movie I have the 24p feature on my player turned off and I experience no judder or stutter at all. My tv is only 60hz by the way. Also I notice no judder or stutter while watching a movie on the many HD channels they have on Comcast. This is why I have yet to buy a 120hz tv. I find no need spending the cash on a 120hz tv when my 60hz V4100 works perfectly. If someone can give me on flat out reason why I should buy a 120hz tv then please by all means let me hear it and prove your case. I have seen 120hz tv's up close and personal at BB and still notice judder to the point where the BB sales person cant come up with an excuse of why its there when technically it shouldnt be. But thats BB employees for you I guess, lol.
