Anybody has any suggestion on how to tweak the sound for the BDP-BX1?
I just bought a BDP-BX1 as a back up player for PS3 which I've been using too much. Though the picture looks great, the sound quality is nowhere comparable to the PS3. The sound on the PS3 is just excellent. It's not just lound, it's exploding, pretty much like sitting in a movie theater. But I've not been able to experience the same thing from BDP-BX1. Has anybody experience different sound quality bw a stand-alone player and a PS3, if they happen to use both? Thanks |

What connections are you using with both players? What audio settings are you using with the BX1?

I had a similar experience recently. I have been using a PS3 (PCM) and bought a Pioneer 51fd (bitstream) and the PS3 sounded way better. For some reason bitstreaming the pio sounded almost compressed on loud explosions and the bass was missing. However, I just hooked up a Samsung 1600 (bitstream) and it sounded awesome. Sounded better than the PS3.

That's a Sony player right? I beleive it's just a repacked s350 for the club stores. I have an s350 and I beleive what you are experiencing is the DRC (dynamic range control), or at least I think that's what it's called. For some reason, I beleive the manual tells to you to leave it on, although I think they named it something retarded. Why, I don't know. Basically they recommend putting it in "night" mode, which quiets the loud parts and raises the quiet parts, thus "compressing" the dynamics of the mix. Check an s350 thread for what to put the setting on. There's no reason why your PS3 should sound better than the player. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will be all to happy to point it out.

DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) defaults to Auto on these players. If the disc specifies DRC, then it is applied by the player when decoding a Dolby track. The Wide Range setting on the player turns off DRC all the time.
However, with with bitstreaming, the player DRC setting is not used. It would be the AVR DRC setting. So, if the OP wants real help, he/she needs to describe the connections and settings being used. |
