Default External Hdd question

My friend is giving me his ps3 hdd and i'm going to make it a external. When i connect it is my ps3 going to reformat it? Or will i be able to just remove the files once it's connected? I just need to know what i'll need to do so i can give him the files back. Thanks in advance.

External hard-drives need to be pre-formatted into FAT32. You won't be able to put save games or data installs on it (except as backups).

Alright. So what do i need to do to give him the files off it? I won't be able to transfer his files to my ps3 before reformatting?

He would need to put that HDD back in his PS3 and then use the Xross interface to either move files off / backup files of it to a USB HDD. Once an internal PS3 HDD is removed, its data can't really be accessed unless it's put back into a PS3.

Unless someone has a hack for it, which I don't.

That means he already put a new HDD into his PS3, didn't he?

There is, but as far as backing up whatever data that is on that HDD, no chance.
