I'm sure you're correct. I had certainly noticed the announcement but didn't read the details since non-HDR is rare.

Oh well. I'm sure it's still a good looking disc.

Watched my copy yesterday evening. The thing that stuck out to me the most was the added clarity to background objects like walls and furniture. For example, in the hallway outside of Baxter's apartment you could clearly see the scratches and general wear on the walls. All in all it is a solid looking presentation IMHO but I still wonder what Dolby Vision would have brought to the table. I'll still hang on to my Arrow set for the special features and booklet.

Slightly more detail in the bright highlights.

(The usual cruddy compression of the site's caps aren't helpful in judging the encoding of it though.) Given how people can go into paroxysms of outrage as to how revisionist HDR is, these SDR-only UHDs from Kino prove beyond a doubt that HDR is just another outlet for revising a 'look' and that it always depends foremost on the taste of the people doing the work as to how the final product looks, be it SDR or HDR, and one system or the other does not have the monopoly on alterations.
Looks like they boosted the contrast in lieu of using HDR, to make it "pop" more. I think the Arrow BD looks more true.

Having seen some prints of other widescreen black-and-white movies from that era projected, I'd say the Kino looks closer to true, if perhaps a little too overcooked. Somewhere in between the two, leaning a bit more toward the Kino, would probably be closest to accurate.

Perhaps - I'm just going off the screencaps, which may not tell the story accurately. I have yet to receive my Kino 4K disc.

It's more that film prints rarely look as flat as that Arrow disc does. The detail is all there and it looks great, but if accuracy to theatrical presentation is what's being sought, then boosting the contrast makes sense. Kino may have overdone it a bit, but I'll be curious to check it out.

If the audio was as good as the LD that fact plus the McBride commentary would make this a must own.
I can confirm that the mono on Kino's Blu and UHD uses the 1989 LD digital track.

My preorder from Kino just shipped. Tried all week to cancel after I bought it from Best Buy. But they wouldn’t let me and then it processed and shipped. So I’ll have two copies. Heading into week 3 of my Touch of Evil order from Kino saying it’s processing.

I don’t believe it! Wow!!!!
This has been the biggest issue with the film since the dvd era. This new release is worth purchasing alone for the audio then.

Same. I may well pick it up at some point but likely when it's a fair bit cheaper.

Given the differences in colour timing on these SDR discs of Kino's it makes me wonder how In The Heat Of The Night is gonna turn out. I really do hope they don't touch it and just give it a nice fat encode.

For those curious, the included Blu is not either a downscale of Kino's new master or a port of Arrow's remaster but uses the same master as the MGM Blu (complete with windowboxed opening credits).

That's pretty lazy, and shameful, especially consider Arrow's release is OOP (but thankfully still available)

How can that be if the mono is from the LD on the Blu as well? They went to the trouble of swapping it out for the Blu, but used the old master...?
