It should be free for me. Won't it be nice for my 360 to have a new brother? Now they are going to be fighting for my attention, damn kids.

From the price drop and MS lack of sales, either Sony is rewarding Japanese customers for only buying a little over 100k 360's (I tend to doubt Sony's that generous, but it would be cool) or they are pretty worried about Wii.

A few links about the launch.

"HD dvd drive for 360 ships in Nov. for around $170. Core system prices dropped in Japan to around $250.

Wii launches Nov.-Dec. at $213-250.

Sony expects to ship 2 million units by years end instead of 4 million as plaanned.

"We want Sony to beat our expectations of 1 million console sales by year-end and 4 million by March,"
Reuters- http://www.topix.net/content/reuters...16772954127671

"Nintendo could beat Sony in console race, experts say"
http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/09...endo/index.php

"Sony borrows $700 million. Plans to cut 10,000 jobs over 3 years. This is the first time that the maker has borrowed money in a decade. Sony borrowed more than originally planned. "
http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/sony/st...ney-185089.php

"As a result of problems related to the mass production of a key component of its Blu-ray DVD player, Sony (SNE) will delay the European launch of its next generation video game console, the PlayStation 3 (PS3). Sony will also reduce the number of PS3 units immediately available in both the U.S. and Japan."

"In the U.S., the PS3 will launch on November 17th, with approximately 400,000 consoles available for sale."
"100,000 units to launch in Japan "

So, best case scenario (not figuring any competitor impact) estimates are from under a million to 2 mil. PS3's/new blu-ray users worldwide for the holiday shopping season.

US Sales prices will not go down:

"Phil Harrison, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe told Wired News, so Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ) is not adjusting its American pricing. "

Unwise and unfortunate if that doesn't change.

Default Regarding the price cut- US Sales prices will NOT go down

I said this in the other post, but I want to make sure people see it:

"Phil Harrison, executive vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe told Wired News, so Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ) is not adjusting its American pricing. "

Just to throw in a random comment, don't those shots of the glossy black PS3 look utterly gorgeous! It just drips with "buy me, I'm soooo worth it"

As for the price, I don't understand it, why are they bothering to compete with MS? MS have barely sold 200,000 consoles! PS3 will blitz that by Christmas regardless of price. But it's across the rest of the world where Sony needs to lower the price - the 20Gb HDMI equipped PS3 is now the main competitor against the premium 360. Release that at the same price as the premium 360 and Sony will clean up.

So without a price cut, we will still have to pay $500.00 to $600.00 for the two different consoles? With the look of the ps3, will the ps3 be in the same glossy black pastic of the psp? If so, the ps3 will be subject to fingerprints. Sony and Microsoft will be battling it out in the years to come and the reason is because blu-ray is what makes the ps3 different from the xbox 360, but in terms of parts, both consoles are very similar. I don't know why microsoft is releasing the hd add-on when combined with the console, doesn't even come close to the ps3. Will the 20Gb also have slots for compact flash and memory stick duo? What about the mystery card reader that we will use with our ps1 and ps2 cards?

I thought they said that they have sold 5 million units of the XBOX 360 already?

Or was that figure just part of the MS hype? Or maybe that 200k is for Japan, where it is the weakest link of next-gen consoles over there.

Care to clarify?
