It's probably just for the bridging segments while shorts will be in 1.33:1 (as is proper).

When they said it was a "limited time club exclusive", they sure weren't kidding about the "limited time" part.... Will we get a week early? Or with their shipping will it arrive after the general release? It will be close!

Like I said, make this and future volumes sell, Disney will give us BIGGER and BETTER.

Which is why, pre-order this NOW, get box sets later.

On the other hand, based on Disney's past behavior, it might make Disney think that these single-disc releases of loosely connected shorts is the only way anyone wants them. Even in the laserdisc days, the Japanese treated them better. They even did a box set called Donald Duck: A Star is Born that sadly got no American equivalent.

I bet so too, Leonard Maltin’s fairly recently book Starstruck is an excellent read and has a very fascinating chapter on the Walt Disney Treasures. His chapter confirms that Dick Cook is why the series happened, and after Bob Iger fired him in late 2009 the series came to an abrupt end as there was no one in Disney management to champion for them. I think and wonder quiet often if the series would have continued had Dick Cook stayed. As the final wave was only 30,000 copies I think that it still might have ended had he stayed if the number of sets continued to shrink each new wave. But I bet that whatever the case we would have gotten much more vintage Disney on Blu-ray in the 2010s had he stayed.

Also here are some of the pages from Starstruck of the chapter on the Walt Disney Treasures. Not the entire chapter, but I think it’s a good sampling to show how amazing both the chapter and Starstruck really are! Please buy the book and support Mr. Maltin!

That was fascinating to read those pages. Just proves that nobody at Disney these days cares about releasing these shorts in any capacity, let alone some nice gift-sets or the like. Instead we get 10 repeats on a disc very few will want to buy. And yes you will already have these 10 cartoons on your shelf or the very least they are on Disney +

I really dislike war propaganda but I'm glad those war time shorts are available for study, but for their art/writing and how studios were brought into the war effort. It would be nice if more people were aware of how the DoD give script approval to this day for things like Top Gun and some of the MCU movies.

I'm damn glad I made it an effort to get as many of those tins as possible. I believe I got every animation one and couple of the others like Tomorrowland and the Alice shorts. I skipped most of the live action stuff though.

I have Starstruck myself, and I can vouch for all of this 100%! The chapter about the Treasures was hands down my favorite part of the book. After reading it, I became even more appreciative for what Maltin and associates did than I already was.

To add to the first two pages, another tidbit from later on in the chapter - and a particularly telling one at that:
Quote:
One release came about because of popular demand: Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow, also known as The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. [...] Fan interest in this program, which originally aired in three parts on Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color, was so great that it was out of stock within weeks of its release and (like many of the other Treasures) was already commanding scalper prices on eBay. I pleaded with the head of marketing to release more copies but he refused. And so it goes.
I sometimes think about how much better the Treasures would've sold had they (or at least most of them) not been limited to a set number of copies. Chances are we'd have at least a few more sets and even Blu-ray versions had they scratched the whole itch...

Unfortunately, his health nowadays isn't the best, so even if the studio wanted to bring it back tomorrow in Blu-ray or even (let's not get ahead of ourselves) in 4k, would he still be able to participate?

I noticed that his voice seems to have a slight lisp now. Maybe it's age?

Maltin's book, Of Mice and Magic, is required reading and was basically my Bible growing up. I wish him all the best.

He would, Leonard Maltin and his daughter Jessie do livestreams almost every Sunday which I almost always attend. He continues to do introductions for content on TCM quite often and mentions pretty often that he is available and would love to do work with Disney again and wished that those in management would let him make vintage content available.
