Default Best sound when not receiving through HDMI

So my buddy just received a new Yamaha 365, polk monitor 60’s, CS1, and PS3. He currently has an optical cable running from the TV to the receiver giving him his audio. Is this the correct way to get audio given his receiver will not process audio from a HDMI? Thanks for the help guys.

Optical from PS3 to receiver, not from tv to receiver. Also check audio settings in PS3, & set audio output as bitstream.

It looks like that receiver has 5.1 multi-channel inputs. Have your buddy look into one of these. This will allow you to use a HDMI cable from your PS3 so you can get lossless audio.

I would see if he can return that receiver and upgrade a level to at least the 465. That gadget is half the cost of the 365

It's been out for a while and it's always located in the Audio and PS3 thread. There's a link at the bottom of the quote that includes a review for one of them. The device is usually for users with high end receivers that don't want to upgrade to HDMI yet. It might be wise to do what blujacket said and just upgrade the receiver instead of investing money into something like this.

I don't see any provisions for bass management or distance adjustments with that box, though.

I suspect you'll have to do that for your analog in at the receiver. there is no bass management when using HDMI at the player, that is done at the receiver. If you were using a player that had analog out and did the decoding then the bass management would be at the player as well as the receiver. I think this is a good idea for people who have a really good receiver or pre-pro that they love with no HDMI in or out. This will give them HD Audio of the player they are using doesn't have analog out but does decode DTHD & DTS-HD-MA onboard.

If I didn't have HDMI on my receiver/pre-pro and if my player doesn't have analog out (this of course includes the PS3) but will do that onboard decoding, I would buy it in a heart beat!

Only a few expensive processors can bass manage the analog inputs. So, this box means no bass management for the vast majority of people.

Aside from the PS3, why buy a player without analog outputs if you have an HDMI-free processor? The box costs more than upgrading from a BD60 to a BD80, for example. The lack of bass management is a pretty significant drawback for everyone who doesn't have full range speakers that can actually handle deep bass. I think most people will get better audio from the DTS core or the 640kbps DD 5.1 track than they will from lossless without bass management.
