Thanks for the link. I'm assuming the audio is English and the Spanish subs can be disabled?

I don't know what makes you think that. The Russian one is actual 1080i, not just an upscaled DVD. Steelbreeze has the Spanish one and says it's nowhere near the resolution of the still capture I posted (which is actually much better looking; the board software scaled it down in terms of compression. It looks much better for real, save a couple of scenes with a bit of macroblocking (probably due to compression on HDNet).

You guys have mentioned some HD broadcasts of the film that were recorded? Does anyone have any links to those videos (if it is allowed to share such links here)? I only have the DVD so I would like to check out what those look like.

Pretty sure it's the same transfer as the DVD.

Hm, so this HDnet version you guys are talking about looks pretty much the same as the DVD, is that what you mean?

The version I have from eBay is most certainly NOT the DVD version. It's obviously 1080i sourced (HDNet) as should be obvious from the screenshot I posted. No DVD shows readable text on the blackboard. It does have a few block issues n a couple of scenes due to HDNet's low bitrate, but otherwise is as good as it gets or may ever get at the rate they're going on converting it officially. The film will probably be rotted by then and we'll all be rotted with it (i.e. 70 years after Roger's and/or Dave's death that the copyright will expire. So much for doing the right thing....)

And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
But they tell me to please go f*** myself

I have the bootleg you mentioned and you're right; it's not bad. I'd rather have a legit release, but like the lyrics above say...

Ok so the HDnet version might indeed be somewhat better then, that's why I was asking if there is a video online or link to watch it or whatever? (again if that would be allowed to share such links here) Or would I only be able to watch the HDnet version on this bootleg disc?

Thank god my tape still works (and to be honest still sounds amazing), because the powers involved show no sign of growing up anytime soon. Music rights can sink any movie or TV show, and this is a prime example. MGM went belly-up years ago, so who even knows where the actual movie’s right lie? And Waters and Gilmour take the cake for the two most immature people in music. They frankly remind me of the Miser brothers from The Year Without A Santa Claus, and believe me, that’s not a compliment. Considering the audio is stored somewhere in uncompressed form (albeit in a format created in the 90s), and there has to be some negatives and prints laying around (and maybe the 90s scan of the interpositive), there isn’t really a reason why this isn’t on Blu-Ray except “just because”. Hopefully this all gets worked out by next year, since I genuinely want to watch this movie in the high quality that it deserves.

I haven't watched the DVD in quite some time, but I remember watching the HDNet version and thinking that there were a lot of film nicks and such that should have been digitally erased - if it was sourced from the DVD transfer, the hidef transfer certainly accentuated the flaws on the film print.

Is this tied up in music licensing issues or something?

Well, there is some good news for The Wall, James Guthrie was interviewed a few days ago and revealed that he is ALMOST finished with the 5.1 mix of the original album.

He said that Covid and other Floyd projects (Animals will have a new stereo and 5.1 mix, see my prior post where it was to be released last year) have delayed it. He was 25 when he mixed the original album and was 65 when he started the new 5.1 mix.

Listen at the above link: He speaks about the 5.1 mix of The Wall at about 32:20

Mettler: If you don't mind me asking, Animals has already been done in surround, and some kind of release idea was drawn up with bonus materials, right?

Mason: Yes—well, I don't know where we've really gotten to with that one. There's been a disagreement between Roger [Waters, original Pink Floyd bassist/vocalist] and David [Gilmour, Pink Floyd guitarist/vocalist] on some aspect of it, yeah. And, to be honest, I'm just waiting to see when the dust settles.

Mettler: Right, right. But you, obviously, would like to see Animals come out in surround, because that was the first album Pink Floyd recorded in your own Britannia Road Studios [in London, from April-December 1976], and it's an album that had a bit of the punk influence on it as well.

Mason: Yeah. It was fun and interesting to record in our own studios, but we didn't quite have the tech-level of an Abbey Road. The equipment was ok—we had an MCI machine [recording console], and we had a good engineer, Brian Humphries, working with us. But it just probably lacked the sort of polish that perhaps Abbey Road would have brought to it.

Mettler: Well, hopefully, a 5.1 mix of Animals will be able to get through the pipeline, so we can truly get the full "Pigs on the Wing" experience in surround.

Mason: Yes, I'd like that. It could be something.

Mettler: I agree.
No, it's mostly more of the same old thing, Gilmour and Waters can't agree on things. I posted about this on the last page.

James Gutherie Has been working on both "The Wall" and "Animals" going back to the master tapes, which long story short, were in pretty bad shape and needed to be baked (yes it's a thing).

Gutherie gave an interview when the SACD of Wish You Were Here was released that his next project was The Wall and he had to do 2 5.1 mixes: one for the Movie and another for the SACD.

The mix appear to be about done, but the relationship between band members aren't that great.

The problem stems from Waters trying to control Pink Floyd even after having been the one who chose to left.

Waters may have been the main writer on Animals (it's debatable, Waters was prone to appropriating all writing credit, even when others had been involved) but the fact is that Animals and The Wall were not solo albums.

Essentially, Waters asked Guthrie to remix Animals without consulting with Gilmour and Mason. He blocked new surround mixes for Meddle and Obscured from being included on the early years and Gilmour is returning the favour. He's entitled to be as much of a bastard as Waters. There's no monopoly to that. And besides, anyone being a bastard towards Waters has my sympathy and support, the man is an utter prick.

Waters blocked those surround mixes on the basis that they were done by Andy Jackson instead of Guthrie. Well, neither engineer was involved wth Animals. I don't see why Guthrie should have exclusivity (The Wall is a different story, as Guthrie was the album's original engineer). Besides, Guthrie lives in the US now and is incredibly slow, which makes him undependable. He never completed the surround mix for Wish in time for the 30th anniversary. It ended up being released on the immersion set 6 years later! I wouldn't be ecstatic about the guy's performance either!

More recent research shows that this is an ownership dispute. The elements survive in full: neg, IP, other intermediate elements, full soundtrack tapes and stems, and complete copies of every soundtrack ever assembled for this movie. RW owns the content that’s on these elements, and WB owns the elements that house the content. Neither one can make a move without the other one’s permission. RW said he’d only okay this movie if they let him recut it his way. Not even multiple cuts in the same set, his cut only. WB won’t agree to that because they know it won’t sell. They’d like to do either just the OG cut or a two-cut package, but Waters won’t agree to that. So basically the two parties are in a standoff with each other regarding this movie, and we’re the ones who are losing.

Someone should try sending something to GF at The Extras to see if he’ll go on the record about The Wall. He addressed Gone With The Wind, so he’ll probably have something to say about The Wall.

(Also, contrary to rumors circulating online, the picture and sound elements for the movie are in good condition. They can be restored. They don’t need a Star Wars special edition style overhaul like the rumors claim. Considering the substance of the rumors, I believe they came from RW or his people.)

I am only addressing the sound part of the film (anything dealing with the Roger Waters era of PF is bound to be in some kind of perpetual dispute i.e. the dust settles when the dust settles) but James Guthrie in the link in my post above talks about how bad the music tapes were, how he fixed them and completed the mixing of the new re-mixes of the Album and Movie in both stereo/5.1. He didn't say it but he probably did an Atmos mix as well (His Dark Side Atmos mix has been released).
