This is free, but you can buy the book if you desire. I hope this helps.

um, you dont need to learn java in order to author movies. there'll be authoring software for bluray just like for dvd, with simple menu editors with wizards and fancy interfaces, etc.

It's alway good to learn programing languages. You can aply that knowlege of Java not to only DVDs, but to websites, and java apps as well.

Try not to limit your self to just Java if you want to make high end High Def media. Whether it's Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Learning to encode videos properly is key for high quality. There are a lot of programs that do this portion automatically, but they are very basic in the methods used to encode.

Let's say you were to capture an HDTV progam off TV. You must capture the program in a high bitrate Mpeg 2 or Mpeg 4 format. Note that if you chose to capture in 1080i, that you must use an inverse telesine filter to deinterlace it to 1080p before you encode it to an AVC, VC1, or Mpeg 2 specification for the media your using. A comercial app does none of this. You can find AVC and VC1 encoding tools f you search for them. Look for Virtual Dub, TMPGenc, and AVI synth for starters.

Basicaly it will take lots of time researching encoding methods, and trail and error to get the premium video quality. Anything less will be a mear home video.
