Beta Man, I just got a reply from cambridge soundworks saying they could not ship to Belgium. Do you know any European site I could order this set from? Thx, Scan

Since we're talking wife-friendly small speakers, how would you rate the Sony HTIS 100 system? Scan

Well, it'd be hard to get smaller speakers, and they do sound surprisingly decent. But with your budget, I'd definitely consider Mirage Omnisats coupled with a good receiver
Alternatively, you can also look at Definitive Technology Pro Cinema series. They sound so much better than Bose, while remaining small yet sleek.

Hope this helps

Women.....

My wife will never accept my floor standing speakers or my HUGE A2-300, but I always assure her that they sound immensely better than something that would have cost 500 dollars more from Bose.

Strange creatures they are...

My girlfriend really doesn't care about sound at all, yet she cares about the size of the tv. I took her down to the local audio shop a couple weeks ago and got her to listen to the Klispch RF-63's. Her response "They're just speakers..."

My wife already knows all the Bose slogans.
She thinks our speakers are too big, especially the Paradigm Servo 15v2 sub, but she LOVES how good music sounds on our system.

We were at a friend's party last year who had a Lifestyle system turned up and she said before the party "please don't talk about Bose". Half way through she came up to me and said "I'm so glad we have the system we do, it sounds a thousand times better than this"

I worked in retail long enough to see it with my own eyes and hated it when customers came in asking for a iPod, I would try to recommend to them a SanDisk, Zune, or Creative MP3 player but they were so brainwashed by Apple that they refused anything else. That is all I have to say about that, Apple literally makes me feel sick inside .
I don't know what experiences you had with Apple, but I think there Customer Service is great. Always willing to help with there products.

Customers being brainwashed? I think the Consumer just knows what is a good product and get what they want.

Your g/f and my wife very well may share the same mind. My wife also wants a huge TV but couldn't care less about resolution/sound/etc etc.

+1. You want smaller good looking speakers I would go with the Mirage. DT Pro Cinema sounds good as I just listened to them recently.

Thanks for the +1

It actually depends on the kind of sound stage you're looking for. Mirage tends to create a well spread sound stage, whereas DT will give u a more focused one. So With Mirage you may not need to tweak speaker placements as much. It'll work excellent for movies, and will have a wider sweet spot.
DT will need more precise placement, but then, the results will be astounding. One thing to keep in mind, get the 800 instead of the 600 if you can afford it (there's a weird connection that you need to do with the 600 - the front speakers need to be connected through the sub for optimal sound)

Hi Again,

Mirage and DT are not easy to find in continental Europe. Here are the readily available compact speaker packs (mid-range, sorted by ascending price):

Cabasse Pack Eole 2
Focal Pack Dome 5.1
KEF Pack KHT 3005 SE
B&W Pack MT-30

And here are some av amps I can choose from (mid-range, sorted by ascending price):

Onkyo TX-SR607
Yamaha RX-V765
Marantz SR5003
Pioneer VSX-1019
Cambridge Audio 640R
Denon AVR-2310
Marantz SR6003
Pioneer VSX-LX52
Yamaha RX-V1900

What do you say? As a reminder, it's a pretty small TV room but the aim is to get very well defined sound.

Regards, Scan

Any one of those speaker packages will be a good one! If you want to spend less - see if you have a Whafedale dealer in your area also. They are the sister speaker to Quad and have a very good reputation as well.

Unfortunately, I haven't deeply researched the brands you mentioned for the speakers. I think the KEF should be pretty decent, but u'd be better off by listening to each of them to find out which ones suit your taste. Take a bunch of your fav CD/DVDs, and then decide.

As far as receivers go, I'm a huge fan of the pioneer 1019. It definitely offers the best bang for buck right now. But since your's is a small room, I think the Marantz 5003 might serve you well too. It doesn't have all the features of the pioneer, esp in the video processing, but I know a lot of audiophiles who swear by the sheer sound clarity from a Marantz.

I would go with the KEF setup and the Marantz SR5003. I had the Marantz SR5003 in bedroom till I got my Pioneer Elite SC-05. It's the best value imo of the ones you listed. I've listened and had quite a few KEF speakers and am an overall fan of the sound from those speakers. I can't vouch for the Focal or Cabasse.

OK, so Marantz already got 2 votes! (wish there was a thanks button on this forum). I think KEF would be a no brainer since they get alround respect. However, they are slightly more bulky than the 3 others. I know this forum considers the "discreteness" of the setup a wifey thing but we should bear in mind that this is about a 4 by 3 meter room. I had already tried to make a 2.1 setup with some PMC monitors of an old studio of mine, but its just looks very disproportionate to the room size. Regards, Scan

PS/ your chosen setup would be 1550eur ex-shipping costs which is indeed a bargain i think
