List of 65/70mm films on 4K UHD

70MM blow-up (which these days some would call an upconvert). Back then the only way to add a magnetic 6-track soundtrack to a film release print. 70MM prints also had better quality control and projection equipment and played in the largest theaters so they were *the* way to see a movie back in the day.

Is it fair to say that some Vistavision films are no longer strictly on Vistavision?

Like, wasn't Vertigo's restoration and its resultant restored negative on 65mm? And is that not now the primary source for remastering? Or are the original 8 perf elements still in use?

They would I spose have also benefited from the fact that at least one generation of their transfers would have been done in 70mm as well which would introduce less extra grain and potentially retain more detail generally.

70mm blow-ups were done optically rather than contact printing which is a downside from a detail perspective, but those prints were made directly from the camera negative versus an internegative (copy of a copy of the negative) so you'd definitely be getting more detail plus added brightness, etc from the larger format.

No one mention "La tulipe noire", it was shot in 65 mm, and it's available in UHD in France for a few month. I am waiting for a discount to buy it,but maybe someone here saw it already ?

For Vertigo they did a photochemical restoration back in the mid '90s and were able to create new 8-perf elements which were blown up to a 65mm IN to make 70mm prints from. Similar story with Spartacus in 1991, the negative was so badly faded it was unusable so they printed the 8-perf separation masters directly onto a 65mm dupe negative.

BUT...that was then. For the modern digital restorations they've bypassed all of the new photochemical elements created above and gone back to the OG negatives, using the OG separations to replace the faded colour. So these VistaVision films are still very much VistaVision, more so than those prior photochemical attempts.

It's been many years since I've seen a 70mm blow up, but my recollection is that they were grainy as hell. I clearly remember parts of Blue Thunder and Ghostbusters looking like they were happening in the middle of a sandstorm. In 35mm, they're not grainy at all - the generation loss from negative to release print gives them a smoothed-over, textured look.

The same case as with Far and Away where they also didn't use original 70mm source, but 35mm inter-positive... I made the note for both at the list.
