A director that I really love is Ed Zwick (Glory, Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, Defiance, Courage Under Fire)....what a great action director, who picks little known but interesting topics.

Great thread, jhiggy. I remember discussing The Fountain with you in the retrospect thread and it was great. Senseless criticisms on Fountain being your favorite movie...? I can back you up on that one. By the way, I blind-bought The New World a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end, although I did not know what to expect.

I voted Tarantino, although I have a handful of favorites. Danny Boyle, Guillermo Del Toro, Robert Rodriguez, and Paul W.S. Anderson are my faves interchangeably.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Michael Mann are up there and also make fantastic movies that I love.

As far as omissions, I would agree that Lumet and Zwick should have been on there, as well as Boyle, but it is a good list nonetheless.

At $12.99, it was a good blind buy. I think the picture quality alone makes The New World worth buying. I am so happy that it got a good treatment. When I first bought a blu-ray player, that was the movie that came to mind that I most wanted to see converted. If you are interested, it would be my pleasure to send you my thesis about the films of Terrence Malick. It has several pages devoted to an analysis of The New World. PM me if you are interested.

It's funny, I was just at the gym and the whole time I was there I was thinking of all the directors I omitted. Danny Boyle is another obvious one, as well as Del Toro, Rodriguez, and Anderson. Mel Gibson I think prob should have also been included, as Braveheart and Apocalypto are excellent films. One that I purposely did not include but would have liked to see get some recognition is Andrei Tarkovsky. He is incredible. Steven Soderbergh is another I should have listed. Ahh, frustrating! I think I will leave the polls to others from now on!

Ah good point. The Omen, The Goonies, Superman, and Lethal Weapon. Great resume and an absent-minded exclusion.

DJ, what would you say are your favorite films from those respective directors? I too remember the fountain retrospect thread. I am still very impressed with how well you interpreted after only two viewings, when it took me much longer and many more viewings to understand it that well.

I know his "street cred" went down these past few years, but I got to say John Carpenter.

#2 would be Clint Eastwood, #3 Sam Raimi, then #4 Blier and #5 Jackson.

So many great directors on that list, but my vote goes to Alfred Hitchcock with Fellini being a not too distant second.

You're a feisty one aren't you? I'm glad a poll created for the enjoyment of others has devolved into you attempting to be tough on a forum.
I must've woken up on the wrong side of the bed this morning and had a bad day at work and with no beer in the refrigerator. I guess thats what got me feisty.

Ahhh the great manga director! I admit, I had never heard of him until he was nominated for an Academy Award for Howl's Moving Castle. Good pick!

I admit, at this point I'm a little surprised! I thought for sure that Scorsese would have gotten more votes; Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Departed!

I fully expected Tarantino to be tops though, as his fans are very dedicated to him.
