The Fountain? Please tell me you're kidding. Who do you think about when you watch that movie?

I've never seen The Fountain but The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream are both masterpieces.

I've been expanding my thesis for several years about symbolism in film, first starting with the films of Terrence Malick and expanding to include other films like The Fountain. While the film has many flaws, its underlying purpose and construction is pretty incredible. As for your second point, a bit of clarity of thought before typing a sentence is always a good idea.

You're a feisty one aren't you? I'm glad a poll created for the enjoyment of others has devolved into you attempting to be tough on a forum.

I completely agree with you; both are excellent films. The one thing about Aronofsky's films, however, is that they are difficult to watch multiple times because they are pretty devoid of happiness.

Definitely, as good as Sean Penn was, I think Mickey Rourke deserved it. And once again, Marisa Tomei shows that she is more than a 40-something pretty face.

As for Requiem for a Dream, I saw it once and haven't been able to watch it again bc it was so affecting. I remember reading Ebert's review of Aliens, where he said that when the movie was over he felt shaken and thoroughly depressed, not wanting to talk to anyone. That is how I felt after watching Requiem. Thanks for the participation.

Jeez.....it's not like people have different tastes....or anything....I'm sure people could say the same about your favorite movie, but they might show a little more respect toward alternative opinions...

I actually love The Fountain, and while it's not my favorite movie, it's nice to see an assortment of movie preferences on the forum.

So...favorite directors are Kubrick, Arnofsky, and Cameron. Based on Duncan Jones' directorial debut and upcoming body of work, he may make my list too. I really respect what the guy is trying to do

Yes, isn't it nice when someone criticizes something that someone takes seriously, like favorite movie or favorite director? The one thing you don't want to see when making a poll is other ppl criticize someone's selections.

What is your favorite film of each of the three directors you listed?

Here's the thing, Sean Penn was incredible but you see performances like that almost every year. It is rare to see a performance like Mickey Rourke's, where his role is equally as physical and affecting.

Just watched 2001 last week and was again amazed at the incredible direction and how far ahead of its time the movie was.

Requiem for a Dream is a fantastic movie but difficult to watch. I love Aliens and I think that Cameron's resume is as good as any. I actually have The Abyss coming on netflix tomorrow...I've never seen it.

Hmm one director who comes to mind that I forgot was Sidney Lumet. I think that 12 Angry Men is one of the top 10 greatest movies ever. I also love Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico (watched it again last nite--I actually met Frank Serpico several years ago at a book signing). Before the Devil Knows Your Dead was also a good film.

A director I did not include who I really admire but the vast majority of ppl have not heard of is Bela Tarr, the great Hungarian director who is known for shooting his films in black and white and using extremely long tracking shots (only 37 total shots in The Werckmeister Harmonies)

Kryptonic, what is your favorite Spielberg movie? For me, I think his best is Schindler's List, which I listed as the #1 film of all time in that thread a few weeks ago. Just look at his resume on imdb....how could anyone disagree that he is not one of the most important and best directors of all time? What a trackrecord.

Someone mentioned the same about James Cameron on the non-poll thread regarding best director. It is safe to say that each of his films is incredible (yes, even Titanic).
