Default Sub woofer issues

Today I received my energy classic system with 8" powered energy sub. I have an onkyo 507 receiver. My satellites sound excellent, but I'm very disappointed with the sub.
With the volume on the rear of the sub set to max and
the setting in the receiver set to 12db max, I can't hear the sub on any TV show or movie I watch. If I listen to the radio
on the receiver, I do hear the sub banging away, but
just enough to hear it. Shouldn't it be at least too loud
that I would have to lower it? I mean it's set to max on
every option available! Any ideas or suggestion to try out?

OK, so I put a real store bought DVD in the bluray player and I actually had to lower the sub's volume. It was too much bass. I'm guessing television shows do not produce much
bass and I have everything set up properly.

All comes down to source. Blu-ray > DVD > Cable/sattelite in terms of PQ and AQ.

Your right! I 'downloaded' a 1080p version of the Imax
superspeedway documentary and put the volume up
to about 65 percent and Andretti was on the track with
an indy car. HOLY freakin crap it sounded like I was in
the car with him!!!!! The sub was pounding away and
all the speakers were putting out all over the place
placing the sound of the car all over the track as he passed
the camera and than when the camera was in the car
while the engine was screaming. THAT IS WHAT ITS ALL
ABOUT!!!

Sounds like your problem is fixed but just to make sure. Make sure you set your speakers to small and this will send the lower freq to the sub.

Yep, make sure they are set to small with a starting crossover frequency of 80Hz (if your receiver allows for adjustment of the speaker's crossovers.) Also, start with a crossover for your sub (LPF of LFE or low pass filter) in your receiver at 120Hz as well, so the sub receives the full LFE signal from the receiver. If this doesn't sound right, adjust it down accordingly.

In my experience, TV DD 5.1 varies from barely OK to rotten. Forget about any real LFE action (Numbers used to be the exception for some reason), and the surrounds are usually MIA. The reasons for poor 5.1 varies by market and individual TV stations. (Even here in Houston, some TV stations have not figured-out how to get DD right.) Also, if I remember correctly, the bitrate for broadcast TV DD is about half the bitrate of convention DVDs. (That statement is based on my some what foggy memory, so someone please correct me if that is wrong.)

I don't think it's anything over 480kbps, if that.

I'm running the Energy classics as surrounds with the sub tucked in behind my TV. I watched Knowing a couple days ago (to test out the new towers) and figured I could just crank it to the max. When they plane flew by and crashed into the ground everything went NUTS! I had to jump off the couch and quickly turn the sub down, there was just too much bass.

But when I watch movies/TV on the cable box, I usually have to turn the sub back up because it sounds too low.

What are your sub settings on the sub and in the receiver. You should not have to change settings, even at relatively high volumes, on your sub like this......

Hve you calibrated with an SPL meter??? That would be something I would look into. This may help with things.
