Default Question about Regions

I had a quick question. Do blu-rays have region restrictions like dvds do? The reason I ask is because I want to buy "Tin Man" on bluray and its only available in the UK currently.

I have a sony bluray player, so I'm not sure what it will play exactly.

Yes. Blu-ray movies follow the region codes.

BD has regions but they are not the same as DVD there is a simpler 3 region system

Tin Man is region free and will play in your US player

Actually, they do make region free DVDs and DVD that are all region. I've got legal releases on DVD from the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, and the US that are either not region coded or coded for the 6 major codes.

I know the BCI DVDs were region all, but that's not a major studio and they aren't around anymore.

Wow. I am so sorry I offended you.

For the record, I have purchased a couple of US discs from Best Buy which were region free but to most people Criterion is not a major studio nor is Anchor Bay.

The closest we've gotten to a major studio is Sony and they don't do an all-region disc or a region-free disc. Instead, Sony will use multiple region codes on the same disc. XXX: Superbit, for example, is Region 1, Region 3, and Region 4 coded.

not offended whatsoever..... Like I said.....

One thing that always got me was why Mexico is a different region when alot of the discs we get are manufactured there

For arguments sake, there may be exceptions out there that are unknown to me OP asked about BD regions, not DVD and I was helping in that aspect

I have never been to Mexico, but the original idea of RC was to protect the theatrical window in different countries. Hollywood movies tend to launch in the US, with Canada either the same day or a few days later, on the other hand Europe tended to be a few months and Australia even more. I remember some time ago, I was talking to a co-worker in Australia and in the chit chat portion the conversation went to a movie (can't remember what it was) that I had just bought on DVD and it was not even out in theatres yet over there.

That happened with the movie Taken, It released in France on Nov 26th on blu and then in the UK in Feb. It was released theatrically here in the USA on Jan 26 2009 and then to blu-ray on may 12 2009.

So with a region B player it could have been imported prior to theatrical release....weird but cool
