Default Newbie question about regions

I have read on Amazon and elsewhere that blu ray players are region locked and most discs will be region coded. Is there any information about this on this site? I have searched and not been able to find anything - could someone please let me know where to look.

Thanks

the link above tells you where to find information on specific titles, but to explain why a site like that is relevant:

regional encoding on blu-ray is OPTIONAL, and it is up to the studio that releases the film to decide whether or not they choose to encode it. policies may also vary depending on the type of film (i.e. we've been told that sony will region encode releases within the first year of theatrical release or whatnot in order to protect theatrical runs outside the BD release area, but after the one year is up subsequent pressings will be region free), which is why that site is relevant and you need to check to see if the specific titles you're interested in are encoded.

Can I get a link for that? I want to show it to people who aren't sure. Btw, is that sony only policy or a BDA rule?

i can't remember where the link is, but i believe it was sourced from paidgeek in the insiders thread from a loooong time ago (i.e. a couple of months).

someone else might be able to inform you better on the actual link, sorry.

Sony, Disney, Fox and New Line follow this, and especially with the low dollar I don't see it changing any time soon

Thank you, but that link only seems to show a map. What I am after is official information about region coding of blu ray. Is there none on this site? I have only stumbled across this site recently, and given its name and logos, had assumed it was some kind of official site which would be a source of definitive information to help a poor confused consumer! Fortunately, there is a fair bit of information on Amazon about hi def, so I may have to rely on that if nothing else is available.

Thank you. I had done that and found a lot of speculation and misinformation.

Does anyone have a helpful answer to my question? I would like to read the official information from the official blu ray forum but cannot find it. There is nothing in the FAQs or even in the glossary. I searched the site on the word 'region' and got no results.

Hi:

FYI - Blu-ray players aren't region-locked, the dics themselves are.

I'm in region B, which I know from reading wikipedia, not from the blu ray official site, since it has NO information about blu ray region coding. I guess I was not really expecting an answer to my question. I am just shocked and outraged that the group who decided region coding is a great thing and should be imposed on people are so completely silent about (a) any factual information about it (b) the reasons for it. If they think it is such a great thing, why is it a big secret???

By the way, if anyone does know the actual reason for it, I would be really interested to know. The most common, and patently untrue, one that I have read is something about stopping people in other countries from buying a US disc while the movie is still playing at theatres in other countries. If that is the case, does anyone know where Batman The Movie (1966) is still playing in Australia. I would love to see it on the big screen!

Also, a technical question: if my machine is not region locked, why can't it play region A and C titles? What is it that stops it from doing so? I'm not technically educated at all, so I don't understand how it could be the case that it is only to do with the discs and not the player.

Please be assured I am not anti blu ray and could not care less about format wars - I am asking these questions with the utmost sincerity. I am just very frustrated about the lack of official information about this very important issue to me as a consumer who doesn't want to waste hard earned money on things that won't work.

Any genuine answers would be most appreciated.

Thank you

L.
