Subwoofer placement - Blu-ray Forum

I am planning on moving my home theater system from the basement to a spare bedroom upstairs very soon. Due to the limited amount of space I'll have, I am going to put my 42" Plasma and all my components in the closet and mount my surround speakers in the corners of the room. If I put the sub in the closet as well, will it affect the performance of it? I was under the impression that you could put a sub anywhere in a room, is this true?

I think it would have a profound effect, as the lower frequency sub waves especially will interact with everything around them, the floor, walls, ceiling, etc... So, even if you put it in a closet and left the door open, you would create standing waves consisting of axial, oblique and tangential modes, but especially the axial because they are the strongest waves. Although sub wavelengths are non-directional, they will still reflect off the walls in the closet and literally reflect around that small space, thus reducing any kind of low frequency output you would get. I would stay away from putting a sub into any kind of enclosure besides the room itself.

In a closet isn't really the best place for a sub. If you can find a spot in a corner of the room, that seems to reproduce the best results as long as you have the volume and crossover in check.

I have mine placed behind the listening area and it sounds great. You could also try near the front of the listening area. These are pretty versatile.
