Default Older Sony receiver help.

I have a 5.1 Sony receiver that just sits in the closet. The pre-outs...it has a single rca for center and subwoofer...the fronts/surrounds are the red & white...can I still use the single rca into one of those from my emotiva for the towers?

If I understand you correctly (and I'm not 100% sure I do), it sounds like that receiver is meant to be used with a powered center speaker or else you would need to use a separate amp for the center. The rest sound like standard passive speaker connections.

If you're asking can your run a single RCA cable from a standard speaker connection to an amplifier then the answer is no. You can only connect your Emotiva amp to a receiver's pre-outs, and it doesn't sound like this receiver has pre-outs for the mains (front left and right).

Just for clarification, could you post a picture of the back of this receiver, or at least provide the exact model number?

Sony STR DE-765. I don't think it has the pre-outs for the mains either...is this common for a receiver to have it for the center and sub only? I got screwed over so i'm selling my Marantz sr5003 (in trading forum) and using this to hold me over. No hd audio..but it will get me buy till I get my situation cleared up.

I'm sorry to hear you have to sell your Marantz. That's a nice model.

I was unable to find a manual or any specs for the model number you provided, but it's not common for a receiver to have a pre-out for the center and not for everything else. Maybe this was more common on receivers a few years ago?? I couldn't say as I haven't been involved in this hobby but for the last couple of years. I hope you're able to replace the Sony with a more current model sooner rather than later.

It's red/white..analog outs from looks of it for right/left/surrounds. I used those cables when I first got my emotiva amp using red only to the preouts on my marantz till I got proper rca cables and it worked fine. Just wondering if it would work find doing it on this receiver. Just find it odd the center has a pre-out and not the others.

I was thinking originally they were standard binding posts for the left/right/surrounds. Either way, if it's an amplified signal then I don't think I would try connecting that to your amp. I think the point of pre-outs is to bypass the receiver's internal amplifier, and it's my understanding that stand alone amps aren't meant to handle signals that are already amplified. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in on this one. I also suggest you contact Sony customer support and see what they have to say about using this model with an amp, but they probably don't open until Monday morning and here it is Friday night.

I'm not going to risk it. Pretty sure I can't do it. I'll run my center off my amp and towers/surrounds off the receiver if I get my Marantz sold. $450 includes shipping in continental US (sorry mods if posting the price here is against rules). I have it listed it the trading forum. Crappy part about this ordeal is I won't have HD audio if marantz is sold.

Good luck with it. It's a bummer to have to part with the Marantz. I'm sure someone will take it off your hands. You could also try posting it on Audiogon and/or Ebay.

Hope so...sold my 55' samsung led for a 50'' pioneer kuro and the check I got was bad so it put me in a bind. I was planning on selling my marantz anyways for a pioneer elite but not under these conditions. The Sony will get me buy till this messed is cleared up. I figure for the price I'm selling it for I can sell it quick.

I hope you can get that mess straightened out.

Very nice setup you have BTW. I just looked through your HT gallery.

Did you mean Sony STR DE675(http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/mod...&region_id=1)? Like fireman325, I couldn't find a STR DE-765. If you meant STR DE675, it has MULTI CH INPUTS allowing you to connect to a decoding BDPs analog outs for lossless audio. You can use Toslink to connect a PS3 for audio( lossy on Blu-ray doesn't sound too bad ). It only has a subwoofer pre out though, so the receiver would have to power the speakers.
