I would recommend the PS3 to anyone right now, even if they weren't a gamer. The standalones just aren't up to snuff yet. But once they are and the price drops to half the cost of a PS3 I could see myself getting one as well.

Obviously the PS3.

Not only does it do games AND movies, but it is also the better long term investment since its got such powerful specs. Buying a profile 1.0 player or even 1.1 is a waste considering the PS3 can probably be had for less, especially if the $400 40gig comes out. The PS3 has incredible future potential that will be unlocked via firmware updates. Standalones dont.

You cant download trailers on any of the current standalones.

Default One reason to rule them all...

PS3 hooks up to the net, automatic firmware up-grade... No more burning CDs or transferring data via USB to the standalone to keep up with the BDJ upgrades. Single Best reason for the PS3 over stand alone Blu-ray player.

Does it come with a wireless remote control? Or is that extra?

The new players coming out after 10/31/07 should be able to do all of this as well. I have a PS3, but will be purchasing the Daewoo players whenever they actually release it.

There have been multiple times when I have seen PS3s being sold with a Bluray remote included for free. Its not a standard thing, but it happens.

The ps3 is by far the best bluray player right now. The only "knocK" some people use is that its a game console, and thus they dont like the look.

Spec wise, value wise, and future-proof wise, the PS3 is by far the best bluray player, end of story.

Is everyone forgetting that the PS3 cant do anything with DTS-ma right now!?!?! If you are a home theater enthusiast, especially with sound, then get the Samsung BD-P1400 standalone. It can bitstream all audio formats, including DTS-MA after the latest available firmware upgrade. It has an ethernet port too, so its no harder to upgrade than the PS3.

I know this is going to get me something less than love, but I'm a die-hard 360 fan. Maybe once I get the red-ring of death I might change up, but for now I'll play my BDs on my Sony.

Question What about those of us that have both?

Currently I have both and use both for playing BDs.

The PS3 load times are less than regular dvd. I hear some people talking about 1 minute load times etc.
Cnet at least in the no so distant past used the PS3 to test many of their new hdtvs. They may still be doing so, article is from Feb. so it is unclear.

Read the paragraph under the editors note which is located below the picture of the remote.

I believe every standalone should have an ethernet jack for upgrading.
Good thing the Sammys do since they got their updates yesterday.
