Default 580,000 PSP slims sold in Japan

580,000 PSP slims sold in Japan

Quote:
For a long time, the Japanese hardware sales charts have been predictable--Nintendo DS Lite on top, Wii outselling the PlayStation 3 four-to-one. But the last three weeks have seen a phoenix-like rising of the PlayStation Portable, as it grabbed and held the top slot.

According to figures released by Famitsu the new, lighter version of the handheld has already shifted approximately 580,000 units in Japan--no mean feat considering the portable version 2.0 was released there just two weeks ago on September 20.

The first week saw 250,000 new model PSPs sold. But even the week before the PSP slim's Japanese launch saw the PSP selling well--due to the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, along with 77,777 limited-edition bundle packs.

The PSP slim went on sale in Japan on September 20, in six different colours, for 19,800 yen. The new model of the portable was first revealed by SCE president Kaz Hirai at this year's E3--a 33 percent lighter and 19 percent slimmer system, it also comes with video output.
Still going strong!

It's good to hear about some of Sony's success. The new Syphon Filter just got released also. 9.5 on IGN. Loved the last one, looks like I might be getting that one.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this. The PSP has been out in Japan since late 2004 and suddenly one big game (Crisis Core) comes out, they do some hardware tweaks and the thing goes like a shot off a shovel. Some fairly subtle improvements had a huge effect.

PSP is finally getting its due. I dont own one, but every time I walk by the PSP section in stores I see some cool games and my desire to buy one rises. Ill probably cave once the god of war game gets released.

The PSP is kind of funny and a great niche area for Sony. Leave it to Nintendo to keep producing the same POS every so-called generation of portable consoles and leave Sony all the room in the world to remain the most technically advanced unit. The PSP will still be the best unit 5 years from now, because Nintendo will have only added 3d-glasses to the same core and call it the 3-D DS. With no foreseen competition in the near future, the PSP will only drop in price and obsolescence is not an issue.

In 2 years it's well on it's way to 30 million. Took the iPod line around 4 years to reach that number in total sales. Niche? I guess in their overall portfolio it is but only becuase they are such a huge company.

Add to that the fact that Sony makes a lot of NEW games for the PSP (and PS3) instead of rehashing the old ones for the 20th time.

How is it that the PSP has been out for 3 years and Sony still has not released a Gran Turismo game for it?!!?
