Amen to that!

Both the first season of SG-1, and the first seasons of TNG were not good at all. I remember getting really hooked on SG-1 at the end of season 2. So just hang in there.

There is no way it will be that expensive when it is actually released.

As far as the show itself ... I love it. It was a slow go for the first few episodes, but episodes 4-8 were just great!

I hate tv shows being released as half seasons on dvd and BD. It is a clear moneygrab by the studios to take advantage of the limited fanbase of these cable shows. Having seen these already on television, I will pass on this overpriced release.

Is this confirmed for a Blu release? I doubt I'll buy it unless I get one heck of a discount.

I've paid more for less, and I really love the show (coming from someone who found previous Stargate shows to be schlocky and unwatchable). Sure, it's trying to be a Battlestar ripoff, but it's doing a decent enough job of distracting me from the fact it's Stargate.

Also, JediFonger, I think the show HAS gotten an unfair shake from fans, and comments like yours prove my point. Longtime stargate fans seem to be upset at the completely different direction of the show (such as the darker tone, lack of shallow shootouts, and the tossing aside of a self-contained episodic format in favor of a more overarching style) rather than the actual writing. Plus, that article was absolute crap. Who cites twitter followers in a story? Oh how journalism has fallen...

Correct me if i am wrong but isn't all sci-fi a rip off at this point. I keep hearing SGU ripped off BSG, yeah and SG-1 ripped off star trek and a few others. I mean these writers take what works, give it a little spin and twist and voila a new series is born. I for one am glad this show broke from the previous molds but i have not seen an original sci-fi anything since i was born. It is all a rip off by writers of what they enjoyed in the genre with their own touch to it, and of course formula's that have done well.

I also agree about fanboys, hate them all, they are the reason sci-fi doesn't do well anymore, when your target base market is nothing but whiners and crybabies why make the show. If you want SG-1 watch SG-1, if you want something new watch this.... but for the love of god don't hate on the show for what its not, at least hate on it for what it is. IMO sci-fi is going down hill fast thanks to the die hard fanboys.

Sci fi is very derivative, but this show is pretty much trying to match the same tone and style of BSG. It's no coincidence that Syfy started pimping this show heavily as BSG was ending, despite the fact nearly no footage was ready yet. It does many things differently, but it can't be denied that they're trying to reach the same viewers (many of whom promptly turned the set off after an episode of BSG ended).

I agree to an extent. I think there are many who didn't allow themselves to like BSG or the new V because they were so attached to the originals they couldn't give the new ones a try. However, my problem with SGU isn't an attachment to the originals, or that they are trying something different. It's that the pace is ridiculously slow. Nearly nothing has happened at all, and every multi part story could have easily been condensed by one or two episodes.

That is very true, thus far everything that as happen could have been setup in two or three episodes. Not sure why they are dragging this so much?

I'm finding just about all Blu-ray TV releases to be way overpriced. The only one that isn't crazy is Weeds.

And Mad Men. Lionsgate has a policy of only charging $1 more for SRP on blu-ray releases.

I only have Weeds, Mad Men, and Pushing Daisies so far. I'm not picking up Lost until the complete boxed set, and I'm waiting on BSG for a condensed (and hopefully more cost friendly) complete set. Otherwise, I'm not picking up any series that has blu-ray mid-run. I'll wait for the back seasons or a complete set.

Agreed, the price is cheap but you also have to keep in mind that Weeds seasons are pretty short (a dozen episodes per season) whereas some other series have 23-25 episodes per season. Still cheap, but I just wanted to put it into perspective.

I also agree that Stargate Universe on Blu-ray is too expensive. I really wonder why Stargate fans are getting shafted on Blu-ray:
- no SG1 on blu
- only first and last episode of Atlantis on blu (with average video quality), even though all full seasons were originally planned
- and now we get SGU but at an expensive price.

I'll buy SGU on blu, but only when the price drops to a reasonable level. It doesn't need to be Weeds-cheap but I'm not paying more for SGU per episode than what I pay for let's say LOST.

Brad Wright et. al. have a lot of talent, as seen in SG-1 and SG-A. That said, I agree with Ryan on some of her criticisms, and I'm annoyed that Brad writes off the V redux so handily. I don't think one scifi show has to "win", and currently I like V a whole lot better than SGU.
Unlike Ryan, I dont' see the sexism angle, and I'll be giving the show at least another 10 episodes to grow on me.

Because probably someone high on up tought that these fans would be ready to pay whatever price to get their Stargate on BD, so let's jack up the prices and make money. That is a strategy that can back fire on you very badly. Fans yes are willing to pay for the stuff they love but it's also not a good idea to make them mad, afterall you are only as rich as the fans are willing to make you.

No SG1 on blu:
The first 5 seasons were not prepared with HD in mind. The 6th season is the first that might be able to benefit from a blu-ray upgrade without going back to scratch on special effects, etc. This is a huge cost factor, and it's not clear that sales would balance the cost.

No SGA on blu:
Atlantis apparently didn't sell well on DVD - an effect of being sort of an also ran series, I'm sure. When Atlantis wasn't outright ripping off SG-1 stories, it wasn't really creating a great new mythology. That said, there are probably some like me who didn't pick up the series because they're waiting on blu-ray.

As far as I'm concerned, the best way to encourage blu-ray releases for the prior series is to buy the blu-ray direct to video productions from both. Hopefully the 2 new DTV movies will get back on track sooner than later.

I agree on all accounts with you.

Just to be clear: I'm not disappointed about SG1 not making it to blu-ray. Sure, I'd love to have it on blu but I knew that the reasons for not releasing it is that the source material would require too costly a process to make it HD-worthy. I did buy Continuum and Ark of Truth on Blu-ray on release date and was very happy with them. I read on insider blogs that MGM was actually quite happy with the sales of those direct-to-video movies.

Atlantis is another bag of beans. Fans were somewhat promised they'd get the entire series on blu by MGM and then they pulled their tails in. When I started collecting Blu's, Atlantis was actually the first series I wanted to buy on blu (heck, it was one of the first announced to be released on blu). No doubt many a fan held off on purchasing the DVD's because the Blu-rays were announced ... and now nothing I also won't go back and buy the DVD's since the HD broadcast recordings I have look better than the DVD's.

SGU: here's a good chance for MGM to please the fans as well as make some money and they bury the whole thing from the get-go by asking a high price

I don't know but to me it sounds like MGM just keeps shooting themselves in the foot and are incoherent in their strategy: when you're selling a show on DVD and at the same time announce it'll be released on blu-ray, only to state 2-3 years later you won't release the whole series on blu-ray, then you're just hurting yourself and angering fans who have been holding off buying the DVD's and waiting patiently for the blu-rays.

Stargate is such a beautiful Sci-fi franchise yet it feels like the higher-ups don't know how to correctly market it.

Stargate Universe: Season One Blu-ray
SG-U 1.0

I have not seen any of SG-U, at the Amazon pre-order price of $39 now, is it worth it? Is it really only 9 episodes???
