Default I'm afraid of Neutrality

I don't think HD-DVD has a chance of winning, but I'm scared of "let's just get along" I've said this b4 and I'll probably say more times, if the formats are allowed to co-exist Blu-ray will get the short end of the stick, the films will be encoded for HD-DVD first then that encode will be thrown unto both discs, limiting Blu-ray's potential while HD-DVD fans are getting all HD-DVD can do.

I've decided to post this because since the format war I've personally held to view if we hold out buy Blu-ray only HD-DVD will fail and the movies we've wanted to see will look and sound even better on Blu-ray thus the wait is worth it. my view hasn't changed, but I've noticed alot of people are getting impatient, they want to see the HD-DVD only movies while still being a Blu-ray supporter, and of course with the additional sales of those various HD-DVD titles the war lasts even longer.

some people hold to the opinion that well it's just me buying this movie what impact will that have, the issue is when you have 10,000 people holding to that same view, during the early adopter phase of the war, it gives HD-DVD more ammo to survive even longer, leading to a potential stalemate.

I am Blu-ray only I don't even buy the DVD's of the HD-DVD movie I want, but I'm not here to impose restrictions, simply to ask all who are Blu-ray only to post here to show their numbers. We just need to wait a little longer, I believe that Blu-ray will win the holidays, then then format war will draw to then end, not over night but soon after.

I'm Blu-ray only except for MMA DVD's which aren't in High Def yet...although UFC in Blu would be sweet. Sometimes I get worried and then I have to remind myself of the positives...Disney, Fox, more space, more support, better PQ and AQ...we'll just have to be patient which is the hardest thing for me because I'm very impatient. Once we can get Warner to release titles like The Matrix, Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, and the like I think we'll find that Warner will be very happy with their sales and we should be in an even better position.

couldn't agree more. BD discs from neutral studio (warner) - are restricted because of HD DVD encoding just being put into BD without addition. Annoying. Yes, BD hasn't used its full potential because of this. well, that except the studios that backing BD exclusively. I've seen that casino royale has 48GB used, and the quality is really good. I owned a warner title. hasn't checked the capacity, but likely to be 15GB.

Same, I am BD only. I did not boycott those HD DVD studio, but they are boycotting us. I am not buying those titles, because I decided to make a switch to BD.

Yes, and that is why they made the deal with Paramount, they know they can't win, but if enough people buy into HD DVD as well as Blu-ray, the format war won't end. They'll be perfectly happy to see Blu-ray have a 2:1 advantage for ever more, the war is only over if it starts getting to more like 4:1 or 5:1.

I agree that we all need to be strong and remain Blu-ray only. HD DVD dying off is the only satisfactory long term scenario.

i personally would rather die then buy a hd-dvd movie. i am not wasting any of my money on something thats inferior i want to go with superior like that saying i am not going to go half assed and by buying hd-dvd movies thats what you are doing is going half assed. this is why i am blu-ray only i will wait for universal to go neutral and having paramount back. sure i will still buy old paramount blu-ray movies before then. i cant even stand it when i see someone looking at hd-dvd movies.

Now that just sounds crazy. I would rather die slowly and in an immense amount of pain before I buy an HD-DVD...j/k. If it was a choice of me dying or buying a $25 movie I think the choice is pretty simple...I'd be dead.

Well, in the end money will decide who wins, not sales numbers, quality or our wishes ... that's the sad facts ... (just remember VHS, the worst of the three beating the other two)

If MS has its way ... well, I have a bad feeling about this ... at least Sony has access to a buck or two as well

I rather be dipped slowly in a vat of sulfuric acid and have my nuts crushed at the same time before buying hd-dvd.

I bet you can't top that!!!

a quick pain free way to die does not show the sign of a true supporter.

......LONG LIVE BLU-RAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*furiously waving the blu flag*

I won't go neutral.

A nice thing is I suspect with the flood of releases people like me waiting for the format war to end have more then enough stuff to buy and rent in the meantime.

Good point. Suppose (what's very unlikely) that the US sales ratio sticks at 2:1 for a while -- HDM adopters in other territories will not wait on the US to see what happens there. They will go with what's winning at home.

In the bigger picture it is not obvious that the dilatory tactics of HD-DVD will work.

Although I originally bought an HD DVD player at about the same time I bought my first BD player, in September of this year, and also for a time bought some HD DVDs, earlier this year I not only stopped buying any more HD DVDs but also stopped watching the HD DVDs I had already bought.

I completely agree that those of us who believe that BD is the technologically superior format, with the capability of delivering superior PQ and AQ, should not be supporting the red side in any way.

If there is a movie from an HD DVD exclusive studio that I want to see, I will buy the SD version.

From what I've read, the powers-that-be at Warners are very much aware of the HD limitations and about "dumbing down" titles from HD to BD - it costs them more Qo put a given title on 2 discs for HD when it fits on a single BD disc. This was mentioned by one of their execs about a month ago when he said they were going to closely watch the sales figures of both formats during q4.

I think the war will last longer than the holidays, Especially since HD DVD is getting the bourne Ultimatum right around christmas shopping time, the fourth highest grossing movie of the year and not a movie thats been out. But blu overall is having better tittles comming out so we have to wait and see.

Excellent post. I have thought about HD-DVD because I want BB, Matrix, V, and Posiedon. I just refuse to buy a paper weight just to watch those movies. Where is the Utility? If anything, my resolve as never been stronger at this point. At the same time, my blood is boiling at Warner for failing to release those titles on blu-ray. Neutrality my butt! Scrap the darn extras and give me the crappy VC1 video and audio. I don't care. Let the people who want the extras wait for the double-dip. I HATE Warner.

If everyone goes neutral the only winner will be Toshiba. They will be the only producer of HD DVD players, which is what they want.

I feel that it will make Toshiba lazy. I think their quality will slip. With no compitition, there will be no one to chanlenge them to make a better product. In a free market society compitition is what drives the quaility up and the price down. I think that will hurt Toshiba being the only HD DVD Producer in the long run, but the will clean up on the short term.
