Default Local Wal-Marts pulled all HDM

Keep in mind I am in a rural area.

They only had blu-ray and they appear to have removed them all. They were with the PS3 games behind glass. I went tonight to try to pick some up and didn't have any success.

They have also discounted about half of all of their PS3 titles to either 39.95 or 29.95 including some decent, recent releases. I grabbed spiderman 3 and Harry Potter (PS3 games that is) Some others for 29.95 included Oblivion and the FF4 ROTSS. I thought these drastic price decreases were kinda strange but they are really stocking up on the number of the games they carry.

so the BRD movies were gone, and games were discounted half prices? Is your store closing or something? thats definitely weird.

unless the are redesigning the layout for the holiday season?

I downloaded the demo a few weeks ago and the kids seemed to like it. They rented SM3 about 3 months ago and I got hooked on it until we had to return it. LOL. These will probably wind up under the Christmas tree. There are a few games that I would like to get my hands on.

I have two stores near me. Both have removed all of the blu-ray movies. I asked about it and I was told they won't stock them in store anymore (just from a store employee) Neither store is closing. In fact, one just opened (super wal-mart - were I bought the games) and the other is a standard wal-mart about to become a super wal-mart.

BTW,
There are at least two more 60GB PS3s total between the two locations. I am very seriously thinking about grabbing one to be the primary theater blu-ray player/media player. Probably worth picking up the 5 extra free movies too.

My walmart has Blu-ray's scattered all over the place. Some inline with the new releases, some in the PS3 cabinet, and some in some overstock game cabinet. Wal-marts merchandising in the electronics area is atrocious. One thing I am hoping for, is that while I was there two merchandising assocciates had boxes on carts and were working on the BD/HDDVD area. The shelfs were pretty bare, and I don't know what was in those boxes, but they were media sized boxes, so I am hoping they were getting ready to get that all set up with HDM for the holidays. I'd love to start buyign some titles at Wal-Mart, their prices are generally pretty good!

Up this way I can say that I have NEVER seen an HD-DVD player or the media to go along with it.

I can tell you with certainty that the price drops on the games is no big deal. WM thought that the big-name movies would also become big-name games. Problem is they overestimated how good the games would be and how high the demand would be for them. Keep in mind you only have 2 time periods when movie related games sell; when they come out in the theaters and when they come home. The company as a whole has a rather sizable inventory on movie related games like SM3, Shrek3, FF:ROTSS, and Pirates3. Since the games didn't sell that well while the movies were in theaters, the only other decent oppurtunity you have to sell a movie related game is when it comes out on DVD/HDM. After that, you're stuck with a game that no one is really going to want.

As for the Blu-ray movies, if they were only behind the PS3 glass then the store was never really meant to carry them. Especially in rural areas, the demand may not yet be there to justify having them take up shelf space that could go to either video games or movies that will sell better at this time.

I can tell you this is by no means a trend; in addition to the 4ft of HDM my store has, they are dedicating an entire endcap at the front of electronics to Blu-ray in a week or two (no, I'm not kidding!).

At some point (fairly soon) you should start to see HDM (specifically Blu-ray) in all stores, but only time (or me) will provide the details.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, what you have said is pretty much what I was thinking sans the game pricing - I just figured it was time to clear out the old stock.

I don't live in a rural area, and the local Walmarts here have increased their Blu-Ray from 4 rows to 6.

Same thing happened at my local Wal-mart in regards to Blu-Ray. I went there the other day to check if they had "The Day After Tomorrow" and noticed they only had the Blu-Ray for We Are Marshall and that was it. A week before they had about 20 titles now they one title with two blu rays thats it. BTW this is a new store and has been opened for about 3-4 months and has some heavy traffic.

You sure it wasn't just moved? Many stores have the BD's worked into their "New Release" sections, a few larger stores in more affluent areas of the country may have either endcaps or a 4-way in their action alleys (with displays running).

The RCA's were a joke, only got 4 in our store last year and all but one came back with loading/freezing issues. I would assume the last one was simply returned at another store.

There's a Supercenter opening about a mile from me in about 2 weeks, making it possibly the closest Wal-Mart to the incorporated city with the highest per capita income in the state (I don't think they'll allow something so gauche within the city limits). I'll be very interested to see what they have in stock on opening day in the way of HDM.

My apologies for stumbling into this thread late...

The local Walmart Super Center near UCF used to have an awesome Blu-Ray/HD-DUD display that had a lot of new and catalog titles, but all of a sudden the stock was partially moved to a regular aisle shelf-space and then all HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays disappeared. I ask the clerks about it every time I'm in and they always say, "They'll be back. The managers are just trying to figure out where they're going to put it." It's been months now and I suspect that time will be never.
