Default One of my discs has stopped working...

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Not a single mark on the disc. Not even a hint of a scratch. Probably been played twice. My Tank Sony BDP-S300 will no longer load the disc. Upgaded the firmware. Still won't play.

I thought Blu Ray discs were supposed to be durable -- now I've got one that was played twice and can't load anymore. I never had that experience on VHS, let alone laserdisc or DVD.

What is it with Sony players and Harry Potter discs lately? I've got snowstorm white noise during certain shots on HP6, confirmed on a friend's TV and player, now I've got a HP disc that won't even load.

You should probably sell all your blu rays, it's a dead technology. VHS was the superior format and is awaiting a comeback

That is very strange. I watched HP6 Friday and it was nothing short of great. I respect your opinion, and do not doubt your honesty. Have you tried playing Order of the Phoenix in another player? There's no reason for the disc to stop working.

I had this happen to one of mine as well. All of my discs go straight from the case to the player back to the case. It worked fine when I watched it the first couple times, then the third time it started skipping. No scratches, no marks, nothing.

Same here but with The Dark Knight. Sudenly from one thay to another started to pixelate a lot and to skip. Not a single scratch or dust on it. And I just watched it three times, the forth was when few friends came at home to see my Home Theater set up and picked that disc up to amaze them and there it was, pixelating as crazy. You can imagine my friends' faces. I have almost 300 BRs and I'm wondering right now as I write this lines if any other disc will have the same problem next time I play it.

Red face This is some scary information!

We really need to hear of more instances where this is happening, for there may be a technical explaination.
I had a hard time with a couple of discs on my Samsung 1500. Skipping, sound drops, and disc freezing were troubles this player had on the following films:

Hancock (the hospital scene: sound drops & freezing)
Spiderman 2 (the scene outside the theater where the lady is playing "spiderman" on the violin:sound drops)
Valkyrie (the scene where the bomb goes off in the bunker:freezing)

I'm going to have to try that next weekend.

Man was I hacked off -- I wanted to preface showing my wife Half Blood Prince by playing the ending of Order of the Phoenix. The player and the disc can't communicate. This on top of all the problems I was already having with the "real" Horcrux memory on the BR for HBP - now I have an entire disc that won't load. Had to resort to pulling out the DVD copy of Order of the Phoenix.

The disc is NOT your problem. It is the S300. I know... from 4 different times the player had to be sent in for repair. What you can NOW look forward to is.... the unit will slowly stop playing discs that it had previously played until it finally will NOT play ANY of your bd's. It has NOTHING to do with firmware OR the disc. It is hardware in the process of completely malfunctioning. Sad but true. Sony will fix it if under warranty and will play fine for awhile until it repeats the problem. The crappy part is now you get to go buy new movies and not know if they will even play when you get home!!! Your problem is going to get progressively worse.

I'll also add that after 4 repairs and A LOT of complaining...I had had enough and Sony wanted to replace the unit with a refurbished unit. ... which I declined. Sony finally reimbursed me $178 for the 2 year old unit. I had tried explaining this problem to EVERYONE and had made a thread in the player section about this very problem with the S300.... and my post was deleted by crackinheadz for no reason whatsoever. Sorry about THAT!!!

How many of you with problems have tried the discs in other machines?

I've never had a problem, but I feel, like HRC said, it may be the player. Which still sucks.

That's a good suggestion. The key factor here is that it stops playing discs it had previously played. As I said...the sad part is that the problem gets progressively worse. It REALLY sucks the fun out of buying new blurays when you know it's a gamble if it will play them or not. At first, it's just one or two discs. THEN it gets much worse until it's 50/50 chance that one will play.... on down to only 10% will play until finally NONE. The unit WILL need repair again and again. I bought a S360 with my reimbursement money and haven't had a single problem other than it will NOT play Speed. My S300 would NOT play it either. I'm stumped... and all firmware is up to date.

I put in OOTP last night and it played fine. You updated your fireware...might be a player issue then.

Thanks for the suggestions, I need to get a new Blu-Ray player anyway - if the OotP disc plays at my bud's house on saturday, I'll be a new player owner before the year is out. I'm not going through the kind of hell expressed above.

Hi.

My copy of "The Dark Knight" has stopped working too. I played it like 3 times, and left it in its case and put it on my shelf for a few months. I want to watch it again and it doesn't work.

There isn't a scratch on the disk, but there is no "waveiness" on the disk like when I first bought it. It is definitely not my player's fault, because I tried it on 3 blu-ray players and my blu ray burner in my computer.

Anybody know if there's warranty on these disks? I paid $35 for it, and I don't want to spend $35 for the same movie when it is not my fault.

I doubt there's a warranty and I hope for your sake you have the receipt so you can try to exchange it for another copy if store policy allows.

Actually, your best bet it to call or email Warner Home Video and have them mail you a replacement.

I had a similar problem with a Star Trek Disc from Paramount and they sent me an envelope to mail them the bad disc and then once received they mailed me the fixed one. It was an isolated incident. I am positive Warner has a similar replacement program for faulty discs.

But if its all Warner discs on your player, it could very well be the player. I would try it (if you can) on a PS3. As this is apparently the bench mark player for all blu-ray movies.

I just called them. Warner Bros do have a replacement program, but it takes them 4-6 weeks just to reply to your replacement e-mail.

I'll be happy waiting.

Oh, lordy, I thought we'd heard the LAST of Sony S300 complaints, from back during the War...
The thing was such a mess, you'd think it'd been deviously designed by HD-DVD proponents, as a fifth-column saboteur.

Hate to fall back on the traditional "Get a PS3!", now that companies got their act together and there are real standalone players out there up to speed--
But with the whole 3D-specs news coming out this week, having something we know for a fact as upgradable may be a smart idea pretty soon.
