Well, considering that my 35's slow loading times have been steadily bothering me, and that today it finally refused to play a movie (Inglourious Basterds) - I've decided it's time for a new stand alone. I don't need any internet connectivity or WiFi or Netflix or any such extra stuff. I'm just thinking quick loading times and 24p option of DVD playback.
I've been hearing great things about the JVC unit, the XV-BP1, and also looking at the Sony BDP-N460. Any Samsung/LG units you chaps know that could steer me on the right path? I'm reading the Amazon review pages and the threads here, but figured I'd cheat a bit and create a thread as well. The only reason I'm not considering the Oppo unit is that I can't fully justify the $500 when there's a new BD spec coming out within a year or so. Last edited by JJ; 12-19-2009 at 08:58 PM. |

Edit: Nevermind - saw in your sig you already have a PS3. Why don't you just use that? ![]() |

This is just my opinion, but I personally think you should just use your PS3 if you don't want to go with the Oppo. I don't think there's a player under $400 that will give you better results. At best you can probably find a good player that will give you equal performance, but why bother when you already own a PS3? Suck it up and buy the Oppo or a Pioneer if you want to improve upon what the PS3 does.

I wouldn't mess with the new Pioneers due to them STILL having the DVD-layer change issue and slow-loading times, from what I've read, lojack. No comments on the JVC? |

The Sony BDP-S560 is supposedly fast with loading times (I haven't found any site that has reviewed it so I can't vouch for it since I don't own it). Also, the Samsung BD-P3600 has gotten rave reviews from cnet f (I'll vouch for it since I just picked it up and I'm pleased with it's fast loading times) and the loading times are faster than the ps3. Both can be found under $250 (Best Buy has both for $230).
PS here is the cnet review for the BD-P3600: http://reviews.cnet.com/blu-ray-play...?tag=mncol;lst Last edited by Wingman1977; 12-19-2009 at 09:18 PM. |

::Pulls hair out:: This is the first issue I've ever had with any BD players I've owned, and that goes back to the Panny 10. But it made me think as to whether I need a new one. The Samsung seems plagued with issues, from what I'm seeing on Amazon reviews - don't think I'd get that one. Sony seems to be my pick still - given Panasonic + Pioneer's slow times and layer-change, the cost of the Oppo - I'm reading about the LG ones now. Any brands I'm missing here? See, now THERE'S an idea. Quite the revolutionary thinking. Let's see - I could get...what, $100 for the SA-CD and around, what, $75 for the BDP? I'd still be $75 short, not too much - I suppose I didn't really want to spend over $200 to begin with - but great idea. I need to think about this more.

I was mostly looking at this from a video performance viewpoint which is why I think the Oppo and Pioneer players are good choices, but yeah I do feel you with the load times. I originally had a BD-P1500 Samsung in the bedroom and it drove me crazy. It was soooo slow. My Sony is much better, but it doesn't come anywhere near the speed of the PS3.
I don't have the time to game nearly as much as like, and when I do its mostly on the Xbox 360 so I don't concern myself with wearing out my PS3. I have a launch day PS3 myself and its still going strong. I'm of the opinion that if you are going with any player that's $300 or under then you might as well use the PS3. Think about it. The PS3 Slim is $300, so if you have that and a quality standalone for a total of $600 and one dies then you are still going to fork over money for another. If you spent more on an earlier PS3 then your total cost is even more...not to mention you've already spent money on the Panasonic player. If you just use your PS3 and one day it dies then you just buy another one for $300...maybe less if its far enough down the road. I just feel like if you are going to get a new standalone you may as well get a visual upgrade while you're at it since nothing in the $300 range is an upgrade over the PS3. |

You chaps are supposed to be trying to SAVE me money, not encourage me to spend more.
Dammit. Once I get an idea in my head, it haunts me until I do it or decide it is 100% unfeasible. The other day, one of my friends thought it was a good idea to put an exit sign in my theater. Now I just might. *(#*&@$&# |

Hahaha! Technically you are saving money. You were prepared to buy a new $300 player, but now you are considering selling two pieces of equipment to cover the costs of a better player which will cost you what...$75 on top of what you get for the other equipment? That's not a bad deal when you consider that the Oppo will replace both of those. Besides...if I have to keep looking at this damn forum and keep contracting upgraditis then damn-it I'm passing the disease along too!

Does the PS3 play SD DVDs at 24p? I didn't think it did, even if you had the 24 setting selected. If it does then it will definitely be the BD player for me.
