Quick-Loading Times + 24p DVD Playback + around $250 = ??? - Blu-ray Forum

Can you spring an extra $50 for a PS3? Or is a gaming console out of the question for you? I only ask because my PS3 doesn't have any of the issues you're currently experiencing. It's got FAST load times, plays every disc I throw at it, and supports 24p.

Edit: Nevermind - saw in your sig you already have a PS3. Why don't you just use that?

This is just my opinion, but I personally think you should just use your PS3 if you don't want to go with the Oppo. I don't think there's a player under $400 that will give you better results. At best you can probably find a good player that will give you equal performance, but why bother when you already own a PS3? Suck it up and buy the Oppo or a Pioneer if you want to improve upon what the PS3 does.

I had to today to finally see Basterds, lol. Long story Rog, but I'd still prefer a stand-alone.

I wouldn't mess with the new Pioneers due to them STILL having the DVD-layer change issue and slow-loading times, from what I've read, lojack.

No comments on the JVC?

It's called a conundrum.

I'm in the same boat. I want to keep the mileage off my PS3, but I haven't seen a unit in the price range that can do what it does. I plan to get an Oppo, like you, but I'm holding out for now.

The Sony BDP-S560 is supposedly fast with loading times (I haven't found any site that has reviewed it so I can't vouch for it since I don't own it). Also, the Samsung BD-P3600 has gotten rave reviews from cnet f (I'll vouch for it since I just picked it up and I'm pleased with it's fast loading times) and the loading times are faster than the ps3. Both can be found under $250 (Best Buy has both for $230).

This is the first issue I've ever had with any BD players I've owned, and that goes back to the Panny 10. But it made me think as to whether I need a new one. The Samsung seems plagued with issues, from what I'm seeing on Amazon reviews - don't think I'd get that one. Sony seems to be my pick still - given Panasonic + Pioneer's slow times and layer-change, the cost of the Oppo - I'm reading about the LG ones now. Any brands I'm missing here?

I was mostly looking at this from a video performance viewpoint which is why I think the Oppo and Pioneer players are good choices, but yeah I do feel you with the load times. I originally had a BD-P1500 Samsung in the bedroom and it drove me crazy. It was soooo slow. My Sony is much better, but it doesn't come anywhere near the speed of the PS3.

I don't have the time to game nearly as much as like, and when I do its mostly on the Xbox 360 so I don't concern myself with wearing out my PS3. I have a launch day PS3 myself and its still going strong. I'm of the opinion that if you are going with any player that's $300 or under then you might as well use the PS3.

Think about it. The PS3 Slim is $300, so if you have that and a quality standalone for a total of $600 and one dies then you are still going to fork over money for another. If you spent more on an earlier PS3 then your total cost is even more...not to mention you've already spent money on the Panasonic player. If you just use your PS3 and one day it dies then you just buy another one for $300...maybe less if its far enough down the road. I just feel like if you are going to get a new standalone you may as well get a visual upgrade while you're at it since nothing in the $300 range is an upgrade over the PS3.

But still - the idea of selling the DV-48 and the Panny 35 to get an Oppo - is incredibly tantalizing.

Dammit. Once I get an idea in my head, it haunts me until I do it or decide it is 100% unfeasible.
