Default New Sony BD players unveiled at CES play SACD!

http://www.sonyinsider.com/2010/01/0...ayer-bdp-s770/

http://ces.cnet.com/8301-31045_1-104...ag=mncol;title

At least two and possibly other players in the Sony line will play SACDs. Great news for SACD-lovers, especially with the upcoming Nat King Cole SACDs and the recently released Sam Cooke "Night Beat" SACD.

That is good news! This will allow me to eventually move my Yamaha SD-2500 SACD player to my HT room, while allowing me to add a SACD playing blu-ray player to my 2 channel system.

I'd love to see a resurgence in SACD players, because Blu-ray music isn't progressing well. And I'm not talking about concert videos. I want access to more high resolution studio albums.

Me too! These days I end up buying albums from artists that I'm not really familiar of (e.g. just ordered a couple of SACDs from John Mayer).

The availability of hardware may convince a few more labels to release SACDs. Stranger things have happened. Supposedly the main record labels are much more inclined to license out their classic albums now to the niche labels for a SACD.

It actually looks more like six models, and possibly even more than that.

See this news.

I hear ya. I've bought way more Elton John albums on SACD than I ever would have bought in CD form.

I would really think studios would find SACD and/or Blu-ray audio to be profitable if they give it a chance. SACD and Blu-ray don't face the piracy issues that are rampant with CDs. It's unfortunate that HDMI wasn't available from the start for SACD. Things might have been very different today.

If this is true then I will be a very happy man.

You're not going to see any resurgence in SACD for popular albums and they haven't even started yet on Blu-ray releases. They'll come and they'll be substantially more popualar than SACD or DVD-A ever were.

I think by 2012 you'll see the big four start pushing Blu-ray as a music media. By then CD will be probably heading towards less than 50% of market share versus digital downloads and they'll look to a new media for additional revenue.

Blu-ray can do it.

Here is hoping. I would love to get into sacd but my musical choices are just not there, at least not in number enough for me to get it. I hope Blu does well with audio but it will be very hard to educate the masses on why it is better considering most people think mp3 means the pinnacle of quality and the younger generations definitely don't understand why you would want anything beyond an IPOD for music.

probably true, but why would sony add SACD playback now?

seems a dying format is a dying format.

i'm glad they did. i have 2 sacd players at home (a PS3 and a Denon player), and knowing there is more recent hardware that supports is great since I have a nice expensive collection.

Good question, my understanding however is not that sacd is dying, it is just a niche market. Much like laser disc that most people seem to think died before it started when in reality it was a niche market served with new stuff for some time.

Why sony would add it now? i do not know... unless they think it is a feature that might pull early adopters away from models like the oppo, and was low cost to implement.

little off-topic, but wonder how good the oppo is? i was very tempted to purchase, but decided whatever stand-alone player i would purchase, needed everything the oppo offered (I have a nice DVD-A collection as well) as well as support for UPnP/DLNA.

DLNA support in the PS3 is simply awesome.

I was willing to compromise on the fact that the standalone players can't mix the various audio tracks the way the PS3 can, and that they are still somewhat slower at load times.... but lack of dlna is a non-starter for me at the moment.

seems i've not been keeping up.

dlna support appears in several blu-ray players now. and possibly even the oppo.

Because it's dirt cheap AND they know there's still a niche market for them, very, very niche.

For popular music, Blu-ray will be the next media they try. I wouldn't be surprised if the Beatles 24/192 Blu-ray box set comes to fruition, maybe we'll finally get the 5.1 mix of Thriller now complete with videos, etc.

Tonnes of stuff you can do with the Blu-ray format's 50GB and for the .mp3 masses there's plenty of other reasons for them to buy it, special features, interactive content, plus you can do 1080p24 or 1080i60 concurrently with your multi-channel HD audio which no format has been able to do before now.

The Mono set is excellent, I would be happy to replace it with a 24/192 mono Blu-ray set though!
