It's a good performance but not great. he's much better in 25th Hour with his monologue.

He's also better in Fight Club.

Who did he lose to that year?? It was a great performance and he put on some serious weight and muscle. Just 2 years earlier he was real skinny in Primal Fear

Roberto Benigni won in '99 for Life is Beautiful. He did a good job. This is hardly the snub of the century. Lest we forget Whoopi Goldberg, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim Robbins, Anna Paquin, Marisa Tomei, Geena Davis and Mira Sorvino all have Oscars.

I think his best performance is Primal Fear, but in any event, Roberto Benigni > Ed Norton...

kidding! What a screw up.

Duvall was amazing in The Apostle though, he should have won.

Oh yeah, 1998, the year Dark City DIDN'T get nominated.

Benigni won.

That was the one where he was walking on the seat to get to the stage...and jumping up and down like a mad man...

I like Roberto Benigni. He is a fantastic comedic actor. There is no excuse for Pinocchio (which I didn't see) or Son of the Pink Panther, but he was superb in Johnny Stecchino and Night on Earth.

Politics play a part in the voting. A movie about the Holocaust will always get votes, especially over a movie about white supremacy.

Ya...I wasn't too happy when Norton didn't get the Award. Same with Tommy Lee Jones winning for the Fugitive over Ralph Fiennes.

I agree with Fight Club but I think American History X is a very close second!

I agree that it hardly the snub of the century. Imo, it is not much of a snub at all even thought it was a great performance. People too quickly label things a "snub" or a "travesty."

I'm not too sure why you listed those other names, stating that they have Oscars? Is it because you think they didn't deserve their wins?

I also completely agree with your later post that politics play a major role in the Academy's selections. A perfect example, at least imo, is Hotel Rwanda not being nominated in 2005 for best picture. Why did it not get nominated? Because the Rwandan genocide is a major black mark on American international affairs in the latter part of the 20th century.

So Rambo didn't get nominated for anything because the world largely ignores the Burma situation?

Well, I think there is a major difference in quality in comparing Rambo to either American History X or Hotel Rwanda, even though Rambo is a very good genre picture.

But also, Rambo was an action picture at heart and did not focus on the Burma situation to the extent that American History X focused on white supremists or Hotel Rwanda, obviously, focused on the genocide.

I don't think politics are the sole determining factor, but I do think they play a role like anything else.

I was just joking, I know Rambo wouldn't be nominated, well, unless they made an award for bloodiest picture. Which they SHOULD.

it was a very passionate role, and amazingly peformed. Edward Norton did such a great job. and how he didnt get a award for that? ill never know..

but i believe Brad Pitt & Norton should've got Academy Awards for Fight Club.

because that film was even better..

i dont think Pitt has won a Globe to this day, but he's been nominated alot of time's
