Default Speaker setting

I have the yamaha 665 AVR. I am getting to know this machine and have a question. The "Large", "Small" settings for the speakers will not allow me to change them. The fronts are set to "Large". The center is set to "Small" and the surrounds are set to "Small". If I try to change any of the setting (including bass settings) I get a "MEMORY GUARD" indication on the AVR. I have an idea that the memory guard has something to do with the initial manufacturers settings. Can I changes these.....or do I even want to?

I was initially going to change the center (Polk CS2) from Small to Large.

Thanks
Mike

You will want to have all the speakers set to small, and crossover at 70-80 hz, although I am not completely familiar with their settings and how they work, I am sure that someone here will chime in and help you out a little more.

Turn off Memory Guard. When you hit the setup button it's right there at the bottom. It should be the bottom-most selection. Kind of strange that it's on. Factory default settings should be off. Did you get an open-box or used unit? Just curious.

The small/large setting has nothing to do with the physical size of your speakers, but rather if they are full-range speakers or not. Your speakers are not full range so you will want to set them to small. When set to small, frequencies below the crossover setting will be sent to the subwoofer. If they were set to large, low frequencies that should be sent to the subwoofer would be sent to the speakers instead.

I agree with fireman. Just set all your speakers to small and set the crossover at 80. Everything below that will go to your sub. Also, don't forget to re-calibrate your system after you've done this.

I have the older V663 however I would expect the 665 is similar in many ways.

In particular, if you change the speakers to small and then recalibrate using YPAO, the speakers will be set back to large. So if he's using YPAO, it won't do any good to recalibrate with YPAO after changing the speakers to small. What he should do after running YPAO is set all the speakers to small, crossover to 80 Hz, and then adjust the level of all the speakers so that the SPL of each one is 75 db with the volume control set at 0.0 db (reference level). He will of course need an SPL meter setup wherever he had his Yamaha calibration microphone setup.

wrigley, I forget, but what kind of front towers do you have? You may just want to leave them as Large until you get a sub......

I would leave the fronts as Large right now until you get a sub. Just be careful not to crank it up too high for too long until you do get a sub. Asking a Monitor 60 to provide the low frequencies for long periods of time will put a lot of demand on the speaker.

I think I'm going to have to sneak this one into the house. When she spots it, I'll beg for foregiveness. Sometimes that's easier than asking for permission!

Yes, leave it at small with a crossover of 80Hz. Are those surrounds from a HTiB? If so, you want them small as well, with a higher crossover of 100Hz-120Hz if they are from a HTiB. Also, check the impredance on those surrounds if they are from a HTiB....they are often rated at 6 or even 4 ohms. This would be bad for your receiver over time. They would require a good amount of power from your receiver and that is just adds more stress that you don't want on it if you can avoid it.

Yes. The only speakers I would try to run as large are the mains. And once you get a sub change them to small as well.

Sometimes it is easier that way. Are you in the market for a sub now, or is that going to be a little while? When you're ready post your budget and you'll get recommendations for the best subs you can get in or around that price range.

No....not from HTiB. I've had those jbl's for about 12 years now. Decent speaker.

OK....then set them to small with a crossover of 80Hz as well....that should do it.
