Default Why Everyone Will Own a Blu-ray Player (article link)

This is an interesting article to read. Swanni is predicting that some Consumer Electronics companies are going to completely stop making DVD players in about 18 months and only offer BLU-RAY players. OPPO is one company that no longer makes DVD players and only offers Blu-ray players, perhaps within 18 months some large consumer electronics manufactories might follow.

Swanni also mentions that maybe in 12-18 months some movies (most likely select new release titles) on BLU-RAY will be BLU-RAY exclusives with no DVD version released to encourage people to purchase Blu-ray players. Perhaps the first studio to try Blu-ray only releases might be Sony Pictures.

Quotes from TVPredictions.com

"Because I predict that in the next 18 months, some CE companies will stop making DVD players. That's right. And by the year 2013, many stores will only carry Blu-ray players; no DVD players at all."

"Additionally, many electronics companies will be pushing hard to get consumers to buy new 3-D Blu-ray players. That task will be easier if there are only Blu-ray players on the market."

"However, it won't be long -- perhaps in the next 12-18 months -- that the studios will begin releasing some movies only on Blu-ray to encourage consumers to switch formats."

As interisting as that is I complelty don't think it's gonna happen DVD, even though Blu-ray is getigns stronger every month DVD still has a strong foothold on the consumer market. I don't think it's gonna happen. maybe in a 2-4 year span but not 12-18 months time frame.

they make a point about studios liking the high selling price of blu rays but how long will they be able to sustain 20-30 prices for movies, its going to have to come down

I agree. I think that we will see a BD only movie come out within 18 months. It's already been almost 5 years since BD has been released to the public. As for stores only carrying BD players that is farther out.

well that could easily happen, because a bluray player is in fact also a dvd player, so technically they are not stopping selling dvd players, just their dvd players will play blurays, or bluray player will play dvds. its not quite the same as stopping vcr production, or laserdisc production, because those forms of media are not upwards compatible.

Kevinbr100 that is the great feature about Blu-ray players. It is backwards compatible and it plays DVD's and CD's.

The last two generations of Pioneer Laserdisc players were dual format players that played DVD's also. DVD won the format war over Laserdisc in about 2 year time period.

When suggested retail prices on Blu-ray players reach $99.99 or lower it would be very logically for consumer electronics companies to stop making DVD players. If a consumer within 2 or 3 years can purchase a Blu-ray player for around $50, then not that many people are going to complain about not being able to purchase the $29.99 480i DVD players that upconvert to 1080P.

I see no reason why it shouldn't happen. If the cheapest BD player is almost as cheap as a DVD player then what purpose is there in wasting manufacturing capacity to make separate and dedicated DVD-only playback products.

I feel the same way with CD-only players. Makes no sense.

I agree with the article. It does make sense. And, as is, DVD players are making much money anymore. Once the price for a good "specs up to date" BD player hits $150, then why bother purchasing a DVD players? For only an extra $100 you can get so much more from a BD player.

Also, from a production standpoint, the profit margin on BD players must be far more substantial for both manufacturer and reseller that the choice to eliminate DVD altogether is quite tempting. And, once that happens, it's only a matter of time before DVDs follow as well. The prices on new release Blu-rays compared to their DVD counterparts is mostly only $5 these days. So, it's not that big of a step for consumers. Hell, I don't think that I've paid more than $18 for a Blu-ray in the last 8 months thanks to Amazon.com (And that's with conversion to Canadian dollar as well as shipping both factored into price)!

The industry is almost at a prime state in which to tip the balance and start forcing Blu-ray upon the consumer. After all, it ain't goin' anywhere anytime soon!
