Normally I'd go with France first, remembering their excellent SE Lynch DVDs, but because of possible forced subs (and, in the case of Mulholland Drive, an HD DVD port) I'd bet on the UK to bring out a decent BD first.

Yeah it's mostly about money I guess but it will come...
But we can certainly wait forever to see Jodorowski's movies released in BR. The more surrealistic the director is, the more we'll have to wait ! |

Would love to see Holy Mountain and El Topo on Blu-ray. I have the Jodorowsky DVD box-set, and we need a Blu-ray release of this!!

Studio Canal Preparing More Blu-ray Titles for Cinephiles
Posted December 30, 2009 05:14 AM by Juan Calonge Studio Canal According to the French media publication Ecran total, Studio Canal will release its third wave of Blu-ray titles in early 2010, which includes some acclaimed movies by major filmmakers: 'Mulholland Drive' (David Lynch, 2001), 'Peeping Tom' (Michael Powell, 1960), 'That Obscure Object of Desire' (Luis Buuel, 1977), and 'Grand Illusion' (Jean Renoir, 1937). Going from recent history with previous Studio Canal titles, most of these will be released in the UK by Optimum Home Entertainment around the same time, and possibly even in the US by Lionsgate a few months later. Studio Canal will also release in France 'The Third Man', whose Blu-ray edition by the Criterion Collection was recently discontinued. Last edited by Steve46; 12-30-2009 at 07:23 PM. |

But I'm assuming, with some of his titles anyway, that the distribution studios have been sold and copyrights shuffled around (October released LH in 1997, Focus released the DVD; Wild at Heart was Polygram and I think MGM put out the DVD), so it'll be a while. I just watched nordic release (Finnish covers). PQ is much better than any dvd of this title of course. There´s not bigger issues on this blu-ray. Picture is good but not best possible and dts-ma 5.1 soundtrack is actually very good (but, Bitrates of picture ((mostly under 20 Mbps)) and sound ((around 2 Mbps)) are not highest possible).
Anyway, Mulholland Drive blu-ray is great upgrade after standard dvd. As a Lynch fan, I´m happy that I purchased this blu-ray copy and now I can sell my old dvd versions, that I´m not gonna miss at all. On blu-ray both picture and sound is anyway lot better than on any dvd. I saw no any disturbing vertical lines on picture that some people were afraid of. Some other smaller disturbances I found, but not any major issues (and i´m quite strict about issues!). To me it cost 13 euros witch is not too much for this upgrade. I don´t recommend to pay much over 20 euros (unless you just want to support David Lynch). This is not perfect blu-ray release (mostly because of quite low bitrate of PQ), but much better than any dvd around. The movie itself is great of course!!! I wish there were also english subtitles... but there´s only nordic. I recommend this blu-ray release of Mulholland Drive to every David Lynch Fan! I think that it´s also important to buy to support those companies that releases art movies on blu-ray!! I think Pan Vision has done quite good job with Mulholland Drive. "Better than the DVD" just isn't enough. It should be outstanding! Awesome! Mind blowing. Like what Warner Bros. did with 2001: A Space Odyssey for example. Now THAT'S one impressive catalogue title! And David Lynch's masterpiece deserves better than what Pan Vision has done to it... |
