Help! cant get DD 5.5 or DTS 5.1 with games over hdmi - Blu-ray Forum

Ive got no problem with movies i can get dolby true HD and dts master over hdmi but cant get 5.1 DD or DTS with ps3 games over hdmi.I can only get it through optical.This has got me stumped can anyone help.

I e mailed my son who's an expert on these things, he has PS3, and has hooked up me, and hundreds of others' home theater systems...he's at work, so I'm waiting on his reply...

What are your settings on the PS3?

Do you have a fat PS3 or slim PS3? That is where to start.

I have a slim.Ive tried under siege blu-ray one of the blus that dosent have HD sound only DD 5.1 and ive got that over HDMI fine.Ive also managed to get DD 5.1 off jurassic park dvd over HDMI so the problem is only for games i can get the DD 5.1 over optical for the games but not HDMI.Also the HD sound on blu-rays is fine too.

Just a thought: if you're getting it over optical, why do you care to get it over HDMI?

If i can work out how to get it over hdmi i wont have to bother switching to optical everytime i want to play a game

Just out of curiosity, what game(s) are you playing that are not playing in DD 5.1? Have you looked at the settings in the game?

If you use HDMI, the PS3 defaults to LPCM, which is better quality than DD or DTS. LPCM is lossless, the other two are loosy.

I really don't understand the problem here, that's how it's suppose to work.

No, he should definitely be able to bitstream DD tracks from games over HDMI to his receiver.

I mean, there probably is a way to do that, but why would he? Why does he want to downgrade? He already said his receiver supports TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, so it should support LPCM. I don't get it.

He doesn't want to downgrade anything. The OP says he's not getting DD or DTS when playing a game on his PS3 and games are still done in DD. Since he's not able to get the audio over HDMI as it's recorded on the disc, that indicates there's a problem somewhere. He's getting TrueHD and Master Audio when watching a blu-ray though.

Only a handful of Dolby Digital games actually output in Dolby Digital. Most output LPCM.

Really dunno why it happens. I'm using a fat PS3 and can't bitstream lossless so I'm guessing that's why it happens. Games like Devil May Cry 4 and Lost Planet always bitstream as DD. However, games like Metal Gear Solid 4 (that even features a DD intro) and Battlefield: Bad Company output as LPCM.
