3D does not do anything for me... to me, the Blu-ray format is about quality and content, not gimmicks...

No I am not excited or interested about it. Once in a while in theaters ok but not at home watching TV. I am sure it will be popular with many people and that is good for them but not for me.

For me it depends, if films actually benefit from 3D. When a considerable number of directors use 3D in the creative process (beyond the gimmick effects) and something "important" would be missing, if the film was 2D instead of 3D, then i'll jump in.

So far my money is on "Yet another 3D wave" though. My next display upgrade is due in maybe 2 years (just upgraded my projector a few weeks ago, not in a hurry to get a new display soon). In the meantime i'll watch how 3D unfolds.

Nah. I don't see much more than a niche market for it. I certainly don't want to spend the money it will take to adopt.

Do you know how many Blu-rays you could buy with the money a new 3D display would cost?

Hell ya I'm excited!! If it comes anything close to what Avatar looked like in the theatre, it's gonna rock!! Plus the 3D sets are all capable of producing some of the best 2D images as well, so even if it does flop, you'll still have a kick ass 2D display. I've been due for a display upgrade for sometime now, and it appears that these sets will only be a few hundred dollars more than the top of the line sets that these TV companies are producing already, so why not? Futureshop.ca and Bestbuy.ca already have listings for the Samsung sets and glasses, and the prices aren't too bad, although the price for glasses is a little steep, but hopefully that will drop quickly. I'll probably hold out for the CES 2010 best in show winning Panasonic displays and blu-ray player with a seperate HDMI 1.4 output (so I won't need to upgrade my reciever as well), hopefully they'll be coming soon!!

Not really. I bought a new HDTV a year or so ago so I won't be upgrading any time soon. Also, the latest and greatest in 3D (Avatar) really strained my eyes so it wasn't a very pleasant experience in that regard. So, I have no desire to watch something that's even worse at home.

For me, Blu-ray is about replicating or exceeding the technical presentation that is available in the original master.

If the film is made in stereoscopic 3D, that's how I want to see it. If the film is made in widescreen, that is how I want to see it. If the film is made in black and white, that is how I want to see it.

Quote:

No.

Popular mainstream movies are being made in stereoscopic 3D. These same movies are selling well on Blu-ray. Once 3D on BD becomes the standard, everyone will be buying 3D for Blu-ray, whether they want to watch it in 3D or not.

This is how it should be done. It takes a feature which could potentially be niche and makes it easily available to all without requiring them to adapt to a new format. A lot of the fools naysaying are forgetting: the new 3D discs will work JUST THE SAME on your players and TV sets. No need to naysay or accuse 3D of being niche, because in time, you'll be buying 3D discs even if you just want to see it in 2D.

I'm not upgrading my screen, player, or receiver any time soon, but I'm still excited. I'm glad to see the days of anaglyph 3D be gone and finally able to have the film on disc exactly as it is SUPPOSED to be. For example, I have a 60 Hz TV. It cannot display 24 fps material natively. Does that mean I don't love the idea that Blu-ray is stored at 24 fps where appropriate? No, I am really happy about that fact, even if I cannot enjoy it.

No excitement here either. Although I didn't really like Avatar too much in the first place, seeing it in 3D made it worse. It was distracting, annoying and I kept wanting to take the glasses off. The close up shots looked fine but everything in the background was blurry and hazy looking.

The 3D experience reminded me that it was fine when I was a kid in the 80's, but it now just comes off as gimmicky and doesn't really add to the movie experience.

Yeah, this is called "focus" and it is a common element of all filmmaking. Sometimes the out-of-focus background might appear more sharply, but it is always blurry and out of focus to a degree. This is how cameras work. It is nigh unavoidable.

Quote:
It IS a new format. 3-D requires a new player, a new television, and goggles.
No, it's not a new format. It's Blu-ray. The same format as always and the new discs will play just fine in your old players. It does NOT require a new player and it does NOT require a new TV. People who enjoy 3D and want to see it in stereoscopic 3D will need to make those purchases, but YOU, a person who hasn't an interest in such things anyway, don't NEED to buy ANYTHING.

Quote:
the 3-D format DOES NOT WORK AT ALL on your players and TV sets; only the 2D version works.
The 2D version is all you (and any other naysayer) would want to watch anyway, so what's the difference? There is ABSOLUTELY no difference to you or any other 3D-hater with the 3D spec being adapted into Blu-ray. You get the VERY SAME enjoyment from the 2D film you ALWAYS HAVE. Speaking against Blu-ray's advancements serves no purpose to better your own situation, it only hinders those of us who actually have an interest in 3D. If the 3D spec weren't adopted you'd be sitting in EXACTLY the same position, but people like me who enjoy seeing 3D advance and become more greatly accepted would be left in the dark.

Basically, if you don't like 3D, don't worry about it. You'll be fine no matter what happens. Hating on it only serves to hold OTHERS back. You gain NOTHING.

Quote:
Calling 3-D a niche has nothing to do with manufacturers cramming 3-D onto discs, even if the buyer can't see it.
They put surround sound on disc even though most don't "see" it. Do they charge extra for that? Should they sell special stereo mix editions for the people who don't have sound systems or don't like hearing in surround?

"Pretty expensive"?

This thread is not about 3D home theater hardware.

This thread is about 3D spec on Blu-ray.

If we start getting 3D discs and they're noticeably more expensive than existing discs (especially compared to existing anaglyph 3D releases which also have no choice for the consumer I might add), feel free to get mad. I'll be right there with you being mad. These new discs will actually be CHEAPER for them to manufacture than existing 3D discs with packed in glasses.

But just because new TVs, new players, new receivers, are expensive doesn't mean ANYTHING in regard to this thread. This thread is about the SOFTWARE SPEC, not ANYTHING to do with hardware.

Even if I had lots of money for new hardware (which I don't), going 3D would be a waste of it as I am legally blind in one eye (20-200). So I personally hope it doesn't go too far.

I haven't watched a movie in 3D yet but I'm interested to see how it'll be, especially if I buy say Avatar 3D on Blu Ray, and assuming I have all the necessary stuff (3D TV, etc) will I only be able to watch the movie in 3D? Will everyone in the room need 3D glasses? I need to know some of these answers before being excited about it.

Unfortunately the upgrade to 3D isn't going to be a cheap one. You will need a 3D capable TV, blu-ray player, 3D software and yes everyone will need their own pair of glasses too. Futureshop.ca and Bestbuy.ca already have listings for Samsung's 3D TV's, blu-ray players and glasses. So go their and price things out so you can have a better idea of what the 3D upgrade will cost.
