Canada set a Gold Medal record for any Country, with a population smaller than California.

It's a huge accomplishment that will be remember far longer than the US winning the most medals...of which are Silver and Bronze.

You're doing a huge disservice to Canada's impressive gold medal record.

Enjoy the record, which is a nice feat for your country. Don't gloat about it.

It's not gloating when you replying to someone playing down the accomplishment, since we finished 3rd over-all.

Again, it's more than a "nice feat" for any country.

Sigh. That might be the case, but beating it into the ground with an attitude just detracts from it.

Just my brilliant $0.02.

Why, because it's not the one you finished 1st in?... Most golds is impressive and I congratulate you guys on it, but don't ignore the bigger picture which is most overall medals (especially since your own country doesn't)...

Someone should have told that to the Canadian Olympic Committee... I could have sworn their Own The Podium goal was to win the most overall medals and not just win gold...

This argument comes up at every Olympics. I wish the IOC would just come up with a points system and have an official standings for the Olympics.

I think both Medal Count and Gold medal count are bad ways of judging the winner.

Medal count reduces the value of a Gold medal to that of a silver and bronze.
Gold medal count basically removes the relevance of Silver and Bronze medals.

If they put in a point system for the medals, I think that would find the best middle ground...more importantly stop people from arguing about who's on top based on which standings list.

Congratulations USA for winning the most medals in a Winter Olympics games.
Congratulations Canada for winning the most Gold medals in a Winter Olympic Games.

@aristotles: How do you like the torch replica? I ordered one online yesterday, can't wait for it to arrive!

Totally agree!

Fortunately, in another few days, no one anywhere will care at all.

Canada and the US are the only places that list standings based on medal count I believe (no source). It's more important to realize that it's not official, Canadians can say they came 1st just as easily as Americans can...technically speaking neither of them are correct since there aren't any official standings.

Haha so true, I'll care though (not about these Olympic standings, but future ones).

Typical (simple) scoring for G/S/B has been (when I've seen it used in the past):

Gold - 5
Silver - 3
Bronze - 1

Using this, what is the total? I'd look it up myself, but don't really have the time now. Regardless, who cares? Both the US and Canada did great this year.

Only in Canada.

In the U.S., we'll remember this as yet another Olympics where we walked away with the most total medals.

Until the rules change, the country that wins the most total medals wins the Olympics. Saying that you won the most of a certain medal is nothing but a moral victory.

And Canadians..... congrats on that gold in hockey. Your country is truly the hockey capital of the world. Now when are you going to celebrate a Stanley Cup win in your country?

Yep !

The UK has traditionally used 4/2/1 I think (when they don't use the gold medal count at least). They'd have to work out a system that makes sense, but most importantly is used everywhere and is officially recognized.

By 5/3/1:

USA scores 103
Canada scores 96

Even under that, the U.S. would prevail 103 to 96.

EDIT: Beaten to the punch by a much brighter mathematician than I.

No, read my post again as there are no official winners of the Olympics (any of them). The IOC doesn't recognize winners nor do they have an official standings system. Generally it's reported by the host country based on the methods they use. USA (and Canada) uses medal count, but most of the rest of the world uses Gold medal count.
For example, China uses gold medal count so when they hosted they listed themselves as 1st place for the last summer Olympics even though USA had more total medals.
