Default Does The PS3(Blu Ray) downscale to 720P?

Hi everyone,

I am hoping you could better educate me about the blu ray movie player in the PS3. I have a 720p Samsung TV. I want to watch a Blu Ray movie in my PS3 at 720p, but it always downscales it to 1080i.

Do Blu Ray movies support 720p downscaling or only 1080i?

Also...

If I can play BD movies at 720P, how do I configure the player to do so?

Thanks in advance

Go into the PS3's display settings menu. Select manual and then custom. Check 720p. Uncheck 1080i.

If your display is native 720p, it should work.

JTK from your experience what looks better? when the ps3 outputs at 1080i and let your TV do the work, or out put 720p for pixelmatching?

On my 360 add on 720p looks great, on the HD-A1 & BDp-1000 1080i looks better.

When I uncheck 1080i.... it goes to 480p!! Maybe Blu-Ray does not support 720p. My games all play in 720P!!

This is weird!!

Your HD compatible monitor or tv is suppose to accept all HD resolutions and output it at resolutions that it can handle or to resolutions that it is compatible with. In other words HD compatible monitors or tv's either display the native input resolution or upconvert/down convert it and display it to resolutions that it can manage to output. Ultimately what you see on your screen is the end result of your monitor capabilities.

Or it was a cache problem with his browser. Or maybe it was something else.
Anyway, erm..

Problem: PS3 downscales 720p on HDTVs (only the ones that don't accept 720p) to 480p instead of upscaling it to 1080i
Games: Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 and Need for Speed: Carbon
Solution: Wait for an update from Sony...

These games have a native resolution of 720p...

^^ Yup, even though BD movie playback is also effected.

My TV accepts and displays 720p but I can't play BD movies in 720p either.

I should be able to if I wanted. This is kind of weird...

Movie playback I always go 1080i.

The 360? Yeah...I did have it set at 720p and I let my TV pick up the scaling chores from there.

If I'm honest with myself, it probably was/is a negligible difference either way.

Right now I'm 1080i all the way.

No that's pretty much all there is to it until we get a firmware update.

For laughs, try something for me: Go back into system settings, display, and check ON everything but 1080p and put in a PS3 game, preferably one that says 720p on the back.

Let me know what happens.

Yeah, everyone whose TV does not accept 720p is pretty much screwed for right now. I don't know how Sony could screw up this bad. Instead of upscaling 720p games to 1080i, it downscales them to 480p! I am hearing rumors that there is no scaling chip in the PS3 and that it cannot be fixed, others say this can be fixed via a firmware update/patch, but how long is this going to take if it is even true?! Is this what we paid over $600 for -- another rushed system launch??? Sony should have put a disclaimer on the box saying "If you purchased your HDTV over a year ago, you may need to upgrade to one of our $4,000 HD sets -- otherwise, welcome to the PS3, displaying content in 480p." SONY STRIKES AGAIN!!! HEEEEELLLLLPPPPP!!!

So how many more spam posts like these can we expect from you? OMG TEH SKY IS FALLIGNG!!!!

Use common sense: Of course the hardware can do it. It simply needs the software and options to control it.

Yes, as is, this is a senseless and puzzling oversight that needs to be corrected in short order.

And it will be.

the other question, is this firmware or game development? maybe it is the game and not sony's problem at all. has this been considered?

What you have out there is some games that say 720p on the back.

That's pretty much like most Xbox360 games, if not all.

Actually, come to think of it, if you look on the back of 360 games you will see 720p and 1080i clearly designated on the back.

Not so in this case. Oddly, I saw NBA2k7 say 1080p while Madden said 480i/720p.

Regardless of that, it really should be as simple as anyone going into the PS3 display settings, setting to preferred native rez. and if the PS3 has to scale and convert that, then so be it.

In other words: If I have a TV that is NOT native 720p (and I do), I should be able to have that thing simply convert the 720p signal to 1080i and be off to the races.

All you need is a firmware that enables that function. The hardware is definitely there, and then some.

No one should be looking at a non HD signal with any kind of an HDTV.

I haven't seen people specify on this, but is everyone using component or HDMI?

I'm using HDMI.

I'm halfway tempted to get those component cables in here and see if it makes any difference or not.

Im using component cables and it makes no difference. my 3 year old hdtv can only display in 1080i or 480p. Blurays look sweet in 1080i, and Marvel Ultimate alliance which says 1080p on the back runs in 1080i on my tv.

Resistance which says 720p on the back is downscaled to 480p on my tv... kinda sucks, but still looks better than any ps2 game ive ever seen

No way around it, huh?

I'm sure by now you've tried checking and unchecking all kinds of things.

This is unfortunate indeed, but I really suspect an easy firmware is coming down the pike in short order for this sort of thing.

Well, hopefully it works well on my TV. It is a Sony. I can change my cable box settings to 720p on the tv and the screen isnt blank so Im guessing it will work. My Tv does support 1080i as well.
