Both being Seth Rogen films and both sharing a similar cinematography (not exactly the same), they might share similar problems. The Knocked Up HD DVD was not a very impressive transfer and that was prolly due to the source material. It also did not sell well (for a movie as popular as Knocked Up) and I am not sure whether it was because of the poor transfer or because people dont care about having comedies in high-def.
Since Superbad shares Knocked Up's cinematography style, will it share its poor quality Hi-Def transfer? |

I don't think so. knocked up's problem wasn't the cinematography. it was a bad movie. it was advertised as a guy comedy with some chic flick thrown in there. it turned out to be a chic flick with a little bit of real humor thrown in. plus the source material and transfer will be different considering the different studio backing it.

I loved Knocked Up, I thought it was just as funny as Superbad, just in a different way.
That being said, I think Superbad will fair better in the quality department, because it's a Sony film vs. Universal. The poorest quality DVD's I have are all from Universal, and Knocked Up is no exception. I guess it's possible, if the film stock was crap, that Superbad will look iffy, but I doubt it. Sony usually treats their releases better. |

Knocked up covered it all. Guy humor, Hormonal *****ey wife humor, hormonal *****ey pregnant woman humor, hormonal *****ey single woman humor.... well you get the picture. It was damn funny. This lady behind us laughed like a jack ass in heat so we couldnt catch a break cuz she kept us going between the jokes. My gut hurt for days-damn her!

Knocked up looked great on both my 1080p sets, and was a fun movie.
wasn't it the number 1 and then #2 HD title it's first two weeks out? I'd expect that Superbad outsells it handily as it appeals more to the ps3 type demographic. |

I think it will do relatively well, since it's on BD... but its $44 msrp is not going to help it's sales (bestbuy and stuff will have it for $35 or more... that's quite hard to swallow for a comedy that doesn't really get much advantage from being in HD).
We'll see what happens... I thought both movies were hilarious, but they are in quite different situations. One is coming out in the holiday season, while being more expensive and being on a format that has a bigger install base -- it's going to be pretty hard to compare them. |

BBY has the sm box set for $60.99 this week! I think BBY is realizing they need to drop prices on BD's first week like they do with DVD's. |

Over time we'll see Hi-def movies fall more in line with DVDs (I hoped, at least)... but this 43.95 MSRP business by SPHE is simply ridiculous, if you ask me. Movies are supposed to go down in price over time, not up (Superbad, Spiderman and Close encounters all have this new $43.95 MSRP). I've been very happy with Sony's titles this year and even rank them as my top studio at the moment... but I'm quite unhappy about the 3-5 dollar price hike (depending on where you shop) their new day and date titles just had. It makes me a little frustrated that more people aren't upset by it, as a price hike like this without outcry just gives them permission to set 43.95 as their new MSRP for all of next year's titles. There's no reason for above $35 MSRP's -- $19-24 for HD movies is definitely the sweet spot... not $30 for a hi-def comedy. Whatever marketing clown recommended that price at SPHE should be smacked. Edit: Close Encounters actually has an ultra ridiculous 49.95 MSRP. Sadly I'm one of the suckers that'll pay the $32 for it... Kind of put it in the territory of being annoyed with the purchase because it's just hitting the limit of pricing -- hardly a place companies should want their buyers in. Bitter consumers doesn't lead to success. The DVD price isn't going to be much cheaper though, which is somewhat comforting, at least. Last edited by fronn; 10-28-2007 at 07:49 AM. |

I just looked at the trailer for Superbad on the Reign Over Me disc and to be honest, if the release is like the trailer, Superbad isn't going to be one of the best looking releases. Seemed kind of soft to me. I immediately checked one scene from Reign Over Me and thought ROM looked better, as did the SM:3 trailer, to my eyes. I've heard Superbad is really funny, but as far as the look, from the trailer it looks like it will be a step down from the best looking releases.

I'm looking forward to this on blu-ray. Superbad is a pretty f***** up movie in all the right places. I Almost died from laughter when I saw it in the theatre. Trust me. The trailer is not a very good indication of what you see in the movie.
As for how it will go on blu...don't know. Depends on how much you want your movies on blu-ray. I haven't seen knocked up, but my brother tells me that it was pretty much a chic flick disguised as a real comedy for the guys. Very soft on the humour and completely copied 40 year old virgin's formula and that Superbad was the superior flick. Last edited by Li'l Nicky; 10-28-2007 at 09:10 AM. |

I agree w/ Buckshot, and if you've read some of his posts you must know that he has a sharp sense of humor.
I saw both of these in the theater and I was looking at my watch about an hour and forty minutes into Knocked Up, about 40 min. before it ended. I don't consider Knocked Up to be a guy's comedy like Old School, or The Wedding Crashers. It was a couple's movie with some occasional laughs, which is why it fared slightly better in the theaters. Superbad was more like American Pie while Knocked Up was more like License to Wed. I enjoyed both, but I didn't like Knocked Up enough to see it twice. Superbad on the other hand didn't get all wrapped up in the typical romance guy gets girl, guy loses girl, guy wins girl back formula that Knocked Up followed. That's my opinion anyway. |
