I have an elite 91 txh hooked up to my ps3 via hdmi directly to the receiver. During certain scenes the receiver will just shut off. This usually happens when the volume is around -20.0 dB. When I rewind and lower the volume around -30.0 dB it plays fine. Why does it shut off...I dont fine it to be that loud. I understand these receivers have a protection mode to shut off. Could there be something else causing the problem? Maybe hook it up via optical? Thanks

It sounds like you have a loose speaker wire that is touching the opposite poll. I had that happen and it took some close looks in very bright light to find it.

This used to happen to me, I also had wires touching.
Once I re-did my wiring it was fine. |

I'm having the same problem with my Onkyo 605 and PS3. Doesn't happen with another dvd player connected with rca cables. It's only a few weeks old (both machines) and I recently rewired my system with banana plugs. I'll have to inspect it carefully and see if that's the problem. I had that happen with my old Yamaha last summer and it was loose speaker wires touching each other. Is there any chance of the hdmi cable being the culprit - some kind of handshake problem? I bought a brand new SONY 1.3a cable when I got my PS3 so it should be fine.

The bananna plugs are easy to check and fix just cut off any excess and put some electrical tape over the holes. I would bet it is on one of your speakers that one strand got pushed out when you put it in and is touching the other poll. And yes it can be intermittent. Would be very surprised if it is the HDMI cable.
