- Immortal Beloved's Ode to Joy scene with an abused young Beethoven lying in the water looking at the stars

- Holly Hunter's performance in The Piano
About any music in Amadeus fits perfectly within the scene.

Another related subtopic: fight scenes supported by great music. Off the top of my head:

- In Kill Bill, the instrumental percussions are building up from the song "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" as the Bride and Oren Iishi size each other up for the final battle.

- In Mortal Kombat Annhilation (terrible movie), one fight scene feels epic simply because of the song Control: Juno Reactor Instrumental is hyping it up. Look up the song online to see what I mean.

- The last scene in Rocky. 'Nuff said.

I LOVE soundtracks too and I don't think you have a strange obsession. I own over 50 soundtracks (including some on SACD) and I really enjoy listening most to the soundtracks from Alien, Amadeus, Dances with Wolves, The Day the Earth Stood Still (original movie) and Spartacus! I LIKE them so much that I even have them on my Ipod!

I can think of several instances of the perfect marriage of music and film, but in two of my favorite movies:

2001
the 2nd and 3rd occurence of "Thus Spake Zarathustra", first where the man-ape has been inspired to kill by the monolith and is crushing the tapir skull. When he tosses the bone behind him in slow motion as the fading chord of the organ ends into the noise of the wind, it is one of those "masterpiece moments".

Of course the appearance of the Star Child with the theme, the audience looking directly into its eyes at the end of the movie highlights the sense that you have just witnessed something great but could never put it in words.

Star Wars: A New Hope
That scene of Luke Skywalker staring into the sunset with the John Williams score was the very musical/visual symbolism of the travails of youth.

Dark City

That lifeguard movie with Kostner and Krucher has a great soundtrack.

Flash Gordon

Knowing
Sunshine score was AWESOME!!!

Today the score is a big deal when I´m anticipating a movie.

A new Spielberg movie means a new score from John Williams. Tim Burton = Danny Elfman. Michael Bay is making a movie. Will it be Hans Zimmer or his protege Steve Jablonsky?

I remember the impact every John Williams score made on me, as a kid. The next and greater impact was the score too the original Terminator, by Brad Fiedel. A simple tune that really defined the mood of the movie.

It's in the first one, too (Liu Kang vs. Reptile). Traci Lords & Juno Reactor really outdid themselves with Control.

What I find strange about this obsession is that the OP thinks it's a strange obsession.

It is not.

Great movies, always have great soundtracks, The Godfather is one of the best examples of this.
Without the music all the greatest movies wouldn't be as masterful and beautiful.

In some cases the music makes the movie even better like in Amadeus.

I am Sam also has a great soundtrack.

Is Dvořák listed in the credits,or did they rip-off his 9th symphony?

No big deal, but listened to Dvořák's 9th a few years ago,and quite abit into it I recognized the score from LOTR.Yes,it is quite beautiful.

Now that I think about it, all my favorite films have had great soundtracks. The themes always tie to a scene and make them memorable.
The scene in Star Wars of Luke looking at the twin sunset-John William's score always makes that scene for me. The ending of The Dark Knight- Hans Zimmer's score. The lullaby from Pan's Labyrinth. Vangelis's love them from Blade Runner. Danny Elfman's score at the very end of Edward Scissorhands. The climax of Requiem for a Dream. (500) Days of Summer's soundtrack. Where The Wild Things Are. etc.

I can't think of a film that I've liked that didn't have great music.

Awesome thread!! I also love movie soundtracks...the most recent one that sticks in my mind was the music in the film "Shutter Island"!! I LOVED the music in that film!! Also...someone mentioned earlier about using other movie soundtracks in new trailers. They do that ALOT...I always seem to hear the "Gladiator" soundtrack and "Bram Stokers Dracula" soundtracks in new trailers and some commercials. I like when they do that because i like being able to pick them out!
