Default Flicker on New plasma with PS3 home screen?

I just last week picked up a Samsung PN58B550 58" Plasma. I noticed when I'm on my PS3 home screen that it sort of has a flicker that catches. It seems like things are very sharp and smooth looking then all of a sudden I see a bunch of noise and it "catches" itself and goes back to being smooth without the little digital dots I see then it repeats this. I don't know if this is because this is a a game console or what. Seems to do the same thing on my Xbox 360 home screen. Kind of bothering me. I'm not sure if this is something wrong with the TV or just something due to my settings and the way a game console displays or what Not sure if anyone had any input regarding this issue or if this is something I need to get checked out. As always, thanks.

It shouldn't during the main menu but it'll improve game play for sure. My samsung gets glitchy every once in awhile on game mode so I was curious. I'm not sure why your main menus are acting up, have you tried a different input? try that if you haven't already.

Yeah from what I can tell it seems to only do that on the main menu. I use high contrast, high cell light, and very sharp/grainy image which is what I like for movies so I don't know if whatever is being output from those main screens doesn't like those settings or not.

Tried game mode. still did the same thing. Makes me scared to use my consoles on the TV which makes me sad.

That sounds like a bad HDMI cable to me.

Oh, one other possibility - do you have 120Hz motion interpolation turned on? That might be what's causing the occasional flicker. Turn that garbage off!

Negative. Tried different cable direct from PS3 to different HDMI port on TV. Same thing. Doesn't look to happen during blu ray movie play back at all.

I don't think so. I dont' have a setting for that from what I can tell. Does that apply with a 600hz Plasma?

I just had this exact thing happen this week. i picked up a new tv for my sister (Samsung 50in 860 series Plasma) and when i hooked everything back up the home screen on the ps3 flickered. from what i read online this is only happening with the "slim" modles and the way to fix it is with a new 1.3b Cat2 hdmi cable. i guess the new slim ps3's are having issues with the older modle cables. but if you dont want to get a new cable set the resolution to 1080i and that should take care of your problem as well! both of these fixed my issue but i stuck with the new 1.3b Cat2 cable so i could comtinue to run it at 1080p. but until you can get a new cable try 1080i! hope this helps!

Interesting about that. Do you have an exact cable in mind that you have tried this with? Does it with my Xbox 360 as well. Glad I'm not the only one though. Thanks for the reply. Appreciated.

i used this cable http://www.mycablemart.com/store/car..._detail&p=1219 but thats because the store is minutes away from my house. i used a cable from my set up which was from monoprice.com to test before i ran out and wasted money on a cable i didnt need and it seems to work with any hdmi cable that is 1.3b Catagory. as for the xbox 360 im not sure because my sister doesnt own one. but if you would like i could hook mine up to her tv quick and see what happens! have you tried setting your ps3 resolution to 1080i? if setting it to 1080i fixes the flicker then a new cable will fix the problem when set to 1080p.

Hey there. Just tried to change setting to 1080i. Still have the issue. I think I'm going to head to Worst Buy today and pick up a ridiculously expensive cat 2 cable and try it out. I'll post back after doing so. This is frustrating.

Honestly that sounds like a defect to me either on the PS3 or the TV. My TV does nothing like this and it is a plasma also. Only thing I can suggest is HDMI cable (someone else already did). Aside from that, see if you can test out your PS3 on another identical TV. It's possible the BB store might let you do this if you explain the situation and talk to the right person. Um, also, if you have more than one HDMI port try the other one. Also make sure you have any type of settings which would modify the signal turned off. I'm not sure exactly what options are on your TV but basically go through your video options and turn everything off.

Right I hear you. I have tried different port and different cable with different settings. No dice. Trying out on another TV would prolly be hard to do but I may look into that. Going to go to the store and pick up a Cat 2 high speed HDMI to see if that helps. It doesn't appear to happen at all when playing a blu through the PS3 with the same ports and settings. Only during that home screen. Haven't run a video game through it yet though. Other folks in other forums seem to report similar problems with their Samsungs in the same line. Must just a "thing".

Interesting. Alright well I went to best buy and bought some ridiculous monster cable with the highest speed possible. I'll be back in a few minutes with an answer...

Thanks for all your help Ima. Really appreciate the legwork! Unfortunately this high speed Monster cable didn't change anything. I fired up Tiger Woods 2010 and didn't see the issue at all during gameplay. I did notice that it switches to 720 so I tried to switch the home screen to 720p but still had the fizzies. Oh well. Maybe I'll order one of those exact cables that you mentioned just to see. Really strange. Thanks for all your help. If you think of anything else, I'm all ears.
